Thomas Williamson releases Dragon Warrior 86 v1.1
Posted by Niklas on 23 March 2002, 16:22 GMT

For all you RPG fans out there, Thomas Williamson has released v1.1 of his clone of the NES game Dragon Warrior. Dragon Warrior 86 features every function found in the original (!), grayscale graphics, and hours of gameplay. It also comes with a complete walkthrough for those of us without patience. :)

I got to play some of Dragon Warrior 86 (I don't have one, my sister does), and it is very true to the original. Nice job!!!!

Speaking of RPG's, A petition has been started at www.starmen.net concerning the development of Mother 3 for Nintendo GameCube. Mother 3 is the sequal to EarthBound, the immensely popular RPG on the Super Nintendo. The game was in production for 4 years, until it became cancelled. I encourage everyone to sign the petition and to spread the word to get as many people as possible to sign it. We need 30,000 signatures at least, and every little bit helps. The link to the petition is above. Thank you!

Since the TI-86 and the TI-83 + both run on the same engines (Z80), I know that the ASM coding is very similar. I do not have the technical "know-how" to port this myself, but if someone out there does, would they be able to? This was my favorite game for the NES but I never did end up finishing it, and I don't have an NES anymore. Thanks.

You'd have to get rid of the grayscale graphics and probably cut down the size a lot (the ti-83 series pretty much has the lowest amount of RAM of all current calculators.) Any ways, It would make a nice game:) There haven't been any new RPGs since, well, since Dying Eyes, really... :***(

Hey ! I take offense in that !
At least say something like "there hasn't been a GOOD rpg since Dying Eyes".

I was going to say that, but then I thought some people would find that offensive. Instead, I'll say this: "there haven't been any new finished RPGs taht I know of since Dying Eyes"

The 83 doesn't have enough RAM. It might be possible to put it on the 83+ with multiple flash pages, but it would require rewriting lots of stuff, and it wouldn't be fun. The 83 also can't do grayscale, and has a smaller screen. It is likely that the graphics depend on grayscale for clarity, and thus you'd have to redraw all of them too. The effort required to do a port would be much greater than the cost of an 86. And if you got an 86, then you could play a bunch of other cool games, too.

I said most of that stuff... anyways, my parents wouldn't let me get an 86 anyways because they think that I already have too many calculators (even though I bought them all w/ my own money).

Wouldn't removing the gray-scale graphics by its very nature reduce the size of the program? Also, if someone is a real ASM nerd they could port it to an 83+ Flash App. Then they would have 160K of ROM to work with.
