Account verification required
Posted by Magnus on 27 January 2002, 13:46 GMT

We have just launched a new system on ticalc.org used to verify the email addresses that are connected to the user accounts on our site. This is done because we have found there to be a lot of accounts that have old non-functioning email addresses registered, which causes us a lot of problems when communicating with the users.

When an account "expires", the user will be asked at login time to verify the email address. This is done by having the page send an email to the registered address, and then using a web based form to input a code that is sent in that email. Assuming that the recipients mail server is online, the whole process should take no more than a minute or two.

All current accounts have been given a random time for "last verified". This means that all current accounts will get the verification prompt sometime between today and approximatly two months from now.

My author email address is outdated too. Who should I contact to have it changed?

Does that address gets checked once in a while? K it's only two days later, but I've sent it before and nobody replied then either.

Activation codes
Peter Martijn Kuipers  Account Info

I've just activated my account,
but man, are these codes long and difficult...
I'm not always in the positoin to copy and paste codes,
so...

Isn't it much better to use shorter codes, maybe even
randomly picked words? (or at least something pronouncable)
I mean, it's just to verify the arrival of the mail....

That is an idea - I didn't conside that some people don't have cut-and-paste. I just plugged in a module we already had, and it created codes of that size.

I'll see if I can look into that a bit later on.

A reasonably secure method would be to take two words from the dictionary file, and concatenate them with a number in between. You could use all words not more than than say six characters, and still have a high number of possibilites (in the billions, at least). Another method that I've seen used is to generate random, pronouncible words, and use those as verifiers. It should be easy to find a list of syllables with a Google search. For my employer's site (ITmom.com), I've always just used a random MD5 hash, and never had anyone complain. It really helps if you have a clickable URL in the email, though.

We are working on connecting the author information with the accounts. The problem is that a lot of people have registered different addresses for author and email, so it's hard to match. But eventually you will be able to do it, at least if you have registered the same address in both places.

I've noticed that I have 2 Author files on ticalc.org, both under the name Patrick Do. However, they are under 2 different e-mail addresses(I switched ISPs, and I couldn't look up the password; the e-mail was lost accidentally), so how do I consolidate them?

So what exactly happens when your account "expires" and you don't verify it?

You can no longer log in, so you can no longer use the site features that requires log in (such as posting news and answering surveys).

Instead, you will automatically be presented with the "please verify your account" prompt when you try to.
