TI-83+ Recall
Posted by Eric on 2 November 2001, 02:25 GMT

TI has announced a recall of some TI-83+ calculators with duplicate ID numbers. Normally, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but since a unique ID is required to install FLASH applications, it poses a problem for the TI-83+. If your calculator ID has a string of seven zeroes after the first three digits, contact TI to rectify the situation. More info can be found on their news page.

The duplicates aren't on the SE, but I just got one, and it's the coolest thing in the world. You can have like 90 APPS, and save EVERYTHING in the Archive.

It'd be wonderful to have a TI-89, but some of us don't have the luxury to use one. Schools have decided that the 89 is illegal to use anywhere. So we have to work with what we can. And since the 86 sucks, we're stuck with the 83. Hell, if they weren't illegal, I'd have one in a heartbeat.

What are you talking about? I bring my 89 to school every day, but only use it at lunch and in English for typing on a TI Keyboard.

Has anyone contacted TI and determined that there is actually any sort of a recall? TI's site says "please call 1-800-TI-CARES or email ti-cares@ti.com, and reference 'Duplicate TI-83 Plus ID Number', for details on how to rectify the situation." They may be replacing the calculators, but there could also be some other solution. Perhaps I'll give TI a ring tomorrow and see what they actually have to say.

Well, ti has had some other problems with their ID system; I still haven't received a reply from TI complaining about never getting the free version of the SDK, due to the TI website claiming someone already used my ID to get the free SDK. The last email I got was "Thank you. We will look in to the matter." TI, can't you get anything right?

Couldn't you just get the ID number from a calc at school and then download the SDK? =p

I've used their flash app online store before (when they were giving out the free ones), and the only problem with them having duplicate ID numbers is that there's a one in a million chance you'll find someone with the same one and share TI's programs without paying for an extra copy.

The way I understand it, the main problem is that TI will not allow you to purchase a commercial flash app for an ID that they have already sold one to. For instance, Let's say that you have an 83+ with an ID of XXX00-00000-XXXX and another person in uzbeckistan has the same ID. You both want this nifty flash app that lets you do interactive graphing. He goes and registers with TI and gets the app. You go and try to get it, but TI says 'nope, you already bought it.' You are now stuck without your flash app.

most likely, but at least they're giving people new ID's, or calculators, I guess. TI takes good care of their customers. I have a friend who's 83+ was busted, they gave him a brand new calculator, and some free APPS that you would normally have to pay for too.

I doubt it was new, it was probably refurbished. Back when I had a brand new TI-92 it was broken and kept resetting. T! sent me a refurbished one that did not work as well as the other when new and had a big R scratched into the back.

That's unbelievable!!! I've never heard of TI doing something like that. You should have called them and told them what happened. I'm sure they'd send you a third one, although I'm not sure whether you'd want to do it. Whatever!

All this TI care comes from overpriced calcs. I do love calcs, but most of you would agree that they're overpriced (especially 83+ SE and 92+).

When I ordered an SE, and it didn't work right, I sent it in (only calc, no batteries or cover) and they sent me back a brand spankin' new one, Graph-Link and all! (I gave the extra GL to my older brother)

My TI-83+SE's link port stopped functioning. I sent it in and got a new one, but no free FlashApps. How'd you get them?

Yep, true, just tried it with some temporarily free apps I accidentally "bought" twice last year, but I hadn't assigned an ID to the 2nd. It won't accept it.
