TI APP Development Contest Results
Posted by Eric on 29 September 2001, 22:10 GMT

Well, it's sure been quiet around here lately, but TI has finally announced the winners to their APP Development Contest, which ended on August 15. The winners receive a paid 3-month opportunity to develop application software for TI, a trip to a calculator conference, and lots of other goodies. Congratulations to the winners.

Update (Eric): TI has notified me that there was an error on the page that has since been fixed. Brandon Sterner's Symbolic Differentiation App was tied for first place, rather than coming in second.

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but I'm kind of in a hurry and unsure where else to post this.

My TI-89 was just stolen, and I need a reputable but cheap place to buy it again. The first time I bought the 89 I basically paid 149.99 for the calc and 19.99 for an extended warranty. Then after tax, I ended up paying 185 bucks. I'd like to minimize costs this time around, so any help with this would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

calc.org is cheap and very reputable.

I'm not sure you need the extended warranty (TI is generally very nice about replacing calculators that haven't been deliberately messed with), but of course it's up to you.

Good News! I got the calculator back today. Turns out the captain of the varsity football team had it. Lol. Now I'm not gonna have to fork out mo money. :-)

However, I did find a way I could have theoretically payed a bit over 100 bucks for a new TI-89 from staples. (It involved a lot of really lengthy price matches and coupons, so I'm not going to post it now. If someone requests it, however, I will.)

LOL. It definitely sounds pretty stereotypical. Apparently what happened was I left it under my desk in English, and the captain of the varsity football team, who sits there the next period, found it. Anyway, I called some of my friends on the football team, got some strings pulled, and now I have my calc back. He said I had some "sweet games" on it, although I'm a bit suprised he was able to figure out how to run them.... This must be like the 7th or 8th time I've recovered this calculator. :-)

Get Phoenix and phoenix platinum edition, both are sweet. Other must have games are BomberMaze 68k, Queue (Tetris), and TI-Chess. They're all nostub too, I've never had any problems with any of them.

Question;
When i try to play SMQ (Super Mario Quest) on my 89, (HW 2.00 AMS 2.03 with patch installed) i get an error:
ASAP or Exec string too long

what does this mean and how can i fix it?
(sometimes i get this for xood also)

The patch can't cover programs which are humgoneously over-sized. For that error, you need to install doors kernal.

The Space Monkey Quest, I think it was just suppose to be funny. Just something the author wrote in. Also does your grayscale flash or blink. If it does I can help you, But I dont wanna write the info for no reason. So anyone w/ blinking grayscale on SMQ let me know. I'll tell you what to do.

Did you read the readme file?
I think it should be the same as the original Phoenix, or the "." button.

From the readme file:
At any time during the gameplay, you can press the dot (.) to quit the game,
or APPS to save the game and exit. If you save the game and exit, it will
resume in the same place the next time you run the game.

Might have been hard to notice, I guess, though.

I highly recomend any and all of the following games including: Falldown (the non-doors one), Race2 (which just happened to win this APP developement CONTEST!!!), Standoff (if you want a good 2 player game), and Tankers (also another good 2 player game)... and i also highly recomend Password Pro to protect your calculator from being wasted by other people. All of these games can be found by clicking the above link!!! go to my site.

If you want to keep people out of you calc then keypass is the way to go, not even 2nd+right+left+on can interfere with it.

i agree... password pro is pretty gay.. however, in my opinion, it is perfect... the only way someone can know that 2nd, left, right, and On will reset your calc is if THEY have a ti-89, and if they have a ti-89, why would they want to use yours? and if somone sets a password, you are the only person who knows that left, right, 2nd and On will reset your calc, so you can't get locked out of your own calc. and if they DON'T have an 89, and they know that 2nd, left, right, and On will reset the calc, then they are probably some kind of nerd who studies calculators that they don't have, and most people that 'nerdy' are usually pretty honest... - my reasons for using Password Pro

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: TI APP Development Contest Results

the odds of someone knowing how to reset 89's is pretty slim (unless they have one) and plus the odds that they know how to unarchive evrything then reset it is very slim (unless they have one) SO I totally agree with you. But I never have password stuff. I dont have the use for it. I live in a place were kids are rich, but only by stuff oike rollerblades, ect. The never buy graphing calc.s and if they do, its the 'world famous' (sucks alot) ti 83 plus. So I have no need for a stupid pass.
