TI-83+ Silver Edition Shipping
Posted by Eric on 4 May 2001, 22:06 GMT

Welp, slowly but surely, the long-awaited new TI-83+ Silver Edition calculators are starting to go live. As with most everything else nowadays, your best bet (if you're *that* anxious for one) is to buy online. So far, from what I've heard, the non-profit calc.org is selling them for $127, and Global Products has them for $129.95 (note: we are not affiliated with either of these sites nor are we endorsing them in any way). Lots of other online retailers will probably offer them soon as well, and eventually maybe they'll pop into your local electronics store too. Anyone have one already? Post about it below.

Same reason people are obsessed with buying a CD from a popular band first, being the first on their block to have a Pentium 4, or owning an expensive brand name shirt first.

because they are immarture ti geeks (note, I could've said nerd, but they aren't worthy of it) with nothing better to do. yippee! now you have a ti-83plus that looks just like a big silver piece of junk! no offense, but a) the 86/89 are still more powerful by standards of math, and b) my dad bragged recently to me that the palm's now have graphing calc software that does quite a bit more...BUT WE WANT THEM SILVER!

:P

- me

(btw somewhere between 113th and 115th post!!!!!)

They are neither geeks nor nerds: they generally don't even program (Actually, basic is a scripting language, and I doubt they do assembly or hexadecimal machine code). The 83+se is simply an attempt by TI to appeal to the same people who bought imacs because they looked "cute" and had a user-obsequitous interface. We all know the 86 and 89 are vastly superior in their native oses, but the 83+se will probably have a ton of flashapps that do what the rest of the line can do, but will each cost $$. And by the way, palm devices *are* generally silver

what, exactly, is the difference between a scripting language and an interpreted programming language?

If it's interpreted, it's not programming, it's scripting.

"generally don't even program" is correct. I bought one and expect it to come tomorrow, however, I do program in BASIC and a little assembly. Most, however, "cuteness" of it or the ability to hold more of those worthless games. 98% of the kids at my school bought TI calcs for the games, and I only know of five who program semi-seriously in BASIC (one is me and I am the only one who has even touched on assembly). The APPs are only $7 a piece, easily affordable if you buy one only every month or so.

Of course, that's only relevant if the user knows how to use the archive and unarchive commands.

Does it remain compatible with all MirageOS/Ion programs? What speed to those games run at: a locked 6 mhz, or do they get a sudden boost to 15 mhz?

BTW, THIRD POST!

Nearly all MirageOS and Ion programs should be compatible, except for ones that use the link port (ZTetris 2 player, Bomberkids, etc). The Silver Edition uses a new hardware assist on the link port which means that you can only send in TI's protocol. (No, this was not done for the purpose of not allowing link games, it was done to both speed up link transfers, and to allow the calculator to send/receive data while the CPU is doing something else.)

Glub...Sorry to be posting two messages, I forgot about the second half of your question. For compatibility, all assembly programs will run at the 6 MHZ speed. If a program wants it, it can manually raise the speed to 15 MHZ.

Do you mean in the new version of MirageOS? How will the things be running ION? And how can program manually raise the speed? Or did you mean that will be an option in MirageOS there user can choose to run on higher speed?

No, he means defaultly, the OS runs programs at the normal old 6 mhz that the 83+ ran. If the program wants, it can manually make a ROM call and set the speed to the full 15 mhz. That call isn't MirageOS or ION dependant.
