Updates at TI
Posted by Eric on 16 March 2001, 02:35 GMT

The folks over at TI are busy indeed. They've recently remodeled their website for the first time in a long, long time (before my time, anyway). All of the old pages on www.ti.com/calc have now been incorporated into the new site, now located at http://education.ti.com/.

A bunch of new software applications have also been announced and released for the TI-73, TI-83+, TI-89, and TI-92+. To find out all the latest news updates at TI, check out their Latest News page.

Update (Eric): I'll also point out that TI released Beta 3 of the TI-89/92+ FLASH Studio SDK yesterday (3/15/01). You can register and download it here. Thanks to Sean Barnes for letting me know.

Could this mean the coming of a new AMS?

That's the way the TI-89 AMS looked during early development. The weirdness on the menu tabs was from the TI-92 version, but they eventually removed it from the TI-89 rom before release because the screen just didn't have enough room for that fancy stuff. You can also notice the font size differences in these early screenshots, where the homescreen command-line is in the big font and some of the dialog boxes use the regular font instead of the small one. They were just too lazy to retake the screenshots when they changed the formatting.

Now, I know that there are people who like the new site, but I just don't like it one bit. I mean, just the way it looks is enough to turn me away. It looks as if it was designed for a six year old child, or perhaps a teacher who is new to computers.

I think TI should keep the old site up, like at www.ti.com/calc/oldsite or something. They don't update it enough for it to be a hassle anyways. Who agrees with me?

Just goes to show you who the new target market at TI is. You can see it in their web site, and you can see it in their latest trend of products, AMS's especially. TI has decided to gain the love of the education market and piss all over us. First they forced us to use hacks to play our favorate assembley games, now they went and changed the site to finally tell us "We care about educators, the rest of you can just go to hell." From their supposed "upgrades", and now their site, that is the point that I am getting from TI and it really needs to be changed.

Now that's interesting. There's a lot less load time. Plus the place looks better and less confusing to navigate.

I'm 13. Bets I'll graduate before these apps are released?

TI takes too long to do anything... And they shouldn't always make only apps. For the 83+ you only have 10. Programs you can have many more- a 2k program is 16k as an app. Then again, if its 24k+ an app is better

This is all for the 83+. Don't know about other calcs

You have made a big point there, I have been waiting for the "in development" apps for the 89 forever. I'll probably be in my mid-twenties, finishing college and they still won't publish them.

The best thing I can say is that if you want it bad enough, make it yourself or get someone to make it for you. Even if you take your dear sweet time making the program, you'll probably be done a lot quicker then the slow people at TI.

yeah, the programmer's blessing:

YOU CAN MAKE STUFF!

the curse:

You can't enjoy StarCraft without wondering how it's done.

Have you noticed the new linking program from TI that is "scheduled" to come out at the end of this year? It is supposed to be able to handle the USB cord for PC's.

BTW: PC's are the best, and Macs totally suck.
