lists.ticalc.org Moving
Posted by Magnus on 19 February 2001, 17:04 GMT

During the day tomorrow, 20 February, all the mailing lists hosted on lists.ticalc.org will move to a new machine. At the same time, we will switch the mailing lists manager software from majordomo to listar.

The lists will still be accessed in the same way, at lists.ticalc.org. The DNS record will be updated to point to the new machine. As this change is made, the old aliases for all commands will be dropped, so it will no longer be possible to subscribe or unsubscribe using the old server. It will still be possible to send mail to the lists using the old server for a short while, in order to minimise problems. However, it will take a while for all DNS servers that cache the zone to update. During this time, some users may still be connecting to the old server, which may end up with some mails not reaching the lists. If this happens, please wait a couple of hours and try again.

The methods for subscribing and unsubscribing will also change - please look for an updated version of the mailinglist information page on our website during the day.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this. If there are any problems caused by this that are not listed above, please let me know at mha@ticalc.org ASAP.

Note: This is during the daytime GMT.

So, do you think Listar will be less a pain-in-the-neck than Majordomo was do you?

Perhaps it is better to use that because they are moving to a new machine. I could speculate that this machine will host other stuff which would run smoother with the ticalc stuff if it also used Listar. Just a speculation.

A pretty good guess :-) There are several reasons we chose to use listar instead of majordomo on the new machine, but one of them was that it handles virtual hosts in a nicer way. It also has a lot of other features that majordomo don't, many of which we use on the other hosted lists.

What are the new features? On what lists? You have my curiosity now. Are there any changes to what we can do on the lists?

Serveral new features, available on all lists (with the exception of newsletter and filenews, that is). Send a mail to listar@ticalc.org with "help" in the message body to get a summary.

That is a thing that can easily be changed back, if people want that. I received several requests to change it *into* using the brackets, thus the change.
So. If enough people want it, get a list together and let me know, and I'll change it back.
