Alien Invasion Released by Jason Ho
Posted by Eric on 5 February 2001, 00:36 GMT

So here I was, sitting ay my computer, calmly downloading my mail, when suddenly I see approximately 8973259237583 new email messages in my mailbox touting some new TI-89 game. Alien something-or-other. And so, after firing up the ol' Virtual TI, I saw that this program was, indeed, quite nice.

So here it is: Alien Invasion, by heretofore unheralded Jason Ho. Alien Invasion is a shooting game for the TI-89 that's similar to others such as Phoenix. It features animation that runs at up to 70fps and contains the usual assortment of weapons, special items, and upgrades. Mad props to Jason for his accomplishment.

Update (Eric): Looks like the new version, v1.1, is out already. This version fixes a bug in the high scores feature of the program.

Update (Eric): And now v1.2 is out. Ahh, when will it all end?

Update (Eric): And why don't we mention v1.3 while we're at it, and v1.4, and v1.5, and v1.6, and err, nevermind.

I second the motion...although they are included inside the zip, so you can click on the file and then click on the image links.

Yeah, I remember when all the featured programs had Animated screenshots. Whatever happened to that? If they stopped because of the size, they should make it an option in account preferences.

Yeah, I've been wondering this too but vti seems to only take still shots. Also, for some reason some of the animated ss's aren't completely at the same framerate, anyone know why?

You can make an animated screenshot using TISshot (click url) but it isn't simple. Make sure you have no calculator image on vti before starting the capture.

I for one am glad that Ticalc featured this game. It is the best I have seen for the 89, and I am sure that Jason worked long and hard to deliver all this fun to the TI community. Thanks for the hard work, Jason, and I hope that we'll see more of your work in the future. Great game.

Yeah, i agree with Will. I know Jason Ho personally (my friend in real life), and i know that he hates school and loves to program. He would like to thank his math class for giving him so much free time to draw sprites for his upcoming games.

Oh hey Jason, say hi to Will for me. Nice game, i dont like your intro though

(Read Subject Heading). Now I have to compete with another Ho. And he knows assembly, and he's Chinese too. Poser. :D. You'd probably would have a great game if I had a TI-89.

I didn't really get what you were saying in Mandarin. Wo shi He De' en. Wo jiao Daren. hehe. I don't think that was right. Anyways, I'm more Catonese+screwed+whatever than just plain Taiwanese. Hey, go search for my BASIC programs for the TI-85 :).

Did you by any chance get the idea for the game at JavaGameplay? Cause i swear it looks exactly like the Alien Invasion feature on the site. I had been playing that game on the site for quite a while. I'd never thought that it'd be available for my ti89. Great work Ho, uh I mean Jason.

Of course! I love that game too, so i decided to make it for my TI-89, but with my own upgrades etc. so i can have more control over the gameplay.

Ni hao!
Actually, it was pretty easy to read if you just sound it out. Many asians (mostly Chinese and Taiwanese) are getting calcs now. At least many in my school are. BTW, how old are you and how old is your brother? I learned ping-ying a long time ago, but still remember.

This is simply an incredible game that has quite a lot of replay value. This game is really enjoyable because it changes each time you play it, and requires a lot more thought than most shooters. Keep up the good work!

I love your game.... Only one that's ever kept me addicted for more than a couple days... However, I do have a minor complaint.... I often won't use my sheild for a few levels, but then I get an upgrade, and I can't see anything else changing, I assume I'm getting a shield recharge. If this is happening, could you please change it so this doesn't happen (unless, of course, you prefer it like this)?

Also, by the way, my highscore (in v1.3) is level 238. (Thanks to my level 88 cluster bombs... Press F1, F1, get the upgrade for the next for levels as the people appear and die... After four levels, repeat...)

I don't know... I think you deserve worship for writing the program in the first place....

Darn it! My high score is onyl 86, but there are teachers lurking everywhere in the school library, so once I save and come back in, some stupid homing missile comes and blows me to smittereens. The bug fix in 1.4 is great, and hopefully you will not make shield recharges redundant. BTW, I tried the directors cut, and it was great the first few times because of the shield recharge, but in the later levels, don't you think one point per three or so seconds is just way too slow, especially with massive amounts of teleportation? Sorry about the ranting.

My (e+e^-1)/2 cents.
