New Staff Member: Alex Tran
Posted by Eric on 17 January 2001, 17:45 GMT

We're happy to announce the hiring of a new staff member here at ticalc.org, Alex Tran. Alex has taken over the support mail duties, a job I held previously. He's been doing a fine job so far, so we're happy to have him on the team. You can read about the rest of the staff here.

Congratz Alex. Nice to see a new face on the ticalc team.

Off the subject but doorsos helps prevent crashes by pushing sto-> and on but...how do you prevent crashes with the errors with the "black bar line" at the top? I always have to reset my calc...whenever it freezes like this.

those address errors are very advanced and cannot be stopped once they happen. So sto[->]+[on] doesn't work. The error is in the program itself. Maybe someone will fix this error as it has happened to many people.

Ticalc.org: I noticed that you removed many offtopic posts. I think that you should put into place a mod system like that of slashdot so that all the messages will still be there, but people can ignore offtopic ones if they want. Otherwise, what you are doing is considered censorship.

c'mon, read all that red text every time you post. (it's read as often as lisencing agreements)

I removed them. Of course it's censorship. I didn't feel (as a news editor) that the messages belonged, and two of the messages I removed were blatant spam. (I don't remember removing more, but I know the first one had several child posts.)

I didn't censor them because I was opposed to or offended by some statement they made. Our rules simply state that replies should be relevant to the news article in question.

Custom also provides that useful, interesting, or otherwise informational replies usually stay (such as yours, which is off-topic).

Those are the rules--you have the right to feel any way you want toward them. If, however, anyone has constructive critism, they should by all means email news@ticalc.org with it!

I'll disclaim myself by saying your reply was more of a statement than criticism, but it was constructive. However, the "Slashdot" system was considered, but deemed to be way too time-consuming. We usually let neat off-topic replies stay anyhow.

Here is a question:

How come the file and magnifying glass icon is not next to any of the names on the discusions?

Yes, I noticed the same and had Magnus take a look at it. Seems our code had a slight bug as to the scope of whichever variable was required. Since we're running a new version of Perl, it suddenly cropped up. Oh well, all fixed now. Thanks for letting us know (but webmaster@ticalc.org is a better way to let us know).

I might have emailed ticalc but I often have done it without receiving a reply (not even knowing if my emails were read), plus if I didn't get a reply, it would still have the chance to possibly influence others who read ticalc.

I honestly think that ticalc is a good site and is well intentioned, but I don't believe in removing comments. I'm currently considering setting up a new site to be run on slashcode, not to compete with ticalc, but to create a more adaptable TI news site that does not remove any comments.

While I understand your removing some comments to save time, my concern is that you might sometimes remove comments that the average reader would have left.

Plus, having a site on slashcode would make sifting through large discussions for the best comments simpler.

Well, all our code is proprietary, so it may not be that simple to assimilate others' code into ours. (I don't know--I'm a DOS QuickBASIC programmer and am happy to stay away from whatever we use here, hehe.)

As a news editor, I try to be unbiased and objective in removing comments. Because we don't have a general, all-purpose comment board, I often let things remain because they are contemporary and informational. I don't just go down and say "off-topic...off-topic..." and delete things--that's not the only qualifying factor.

Usually, it's the completely unintelligible posts, most vicious flames (especially with foul language), and requests for files or ports that get removed. Most other things have a very good chance of staying. Oh, and I remove double-posts when I see them, too. ;)

Hmm, all email sent to ticalc.org is read--I get a copy of everything sent to news@ticalc.org or faq@ticalc.org, for instance, but we usually don't have time to respond to things sent to news@ticalc.org--we get a lot of mail.

I encourage you to set up a news site! We do recognize the need for general-purpose message boards, but that's really what mailing-lists are for, and we just don't have the resources to police a general-purpose message board. Let me know whether that site ever materializes--I'll check it out.

I realize how you are trying to be objective and unbiased, I just have the opinion that it isn't always completely uniform (as it can't always be with a few humans moderating the board), and the big problem is probably the lack of a moderation system. About the new TI site, though, I'll let you know whether it does ever materialize. I registered two domains for it last night, and I'll make public what they are once they show up in the whois database. I also have a bit of preliminary information that I posted in the URL box for this (lol, now that's one board that's entirely inflexible; I'm hoping to install a new board soon), and I'll hopefullly have a preliminary page up at the new site explaining its mission statement and containing a volunteer staff application in the near future (hopefully next weekend, as I have midterms next week, but I'll let you know if you want). Meanwhile, one of my friends, whose server it will be on, is busy installing slashcode on his site. After that, it will likely be up pretty soon, after I configure it as a TI site and set up things and add staff.

We do have a moderation system--it's Eric and me. ;) We can't pretend to represent the entire TI community (as much as that exists) in moderating these posts--we only represent ourselves--but we feel we are generally fair and unbiased, and as you say yourself, that's the best we can really hope for. It's what we aspire for, anyhow.

I realize I've seen your TI-89 site before. It'll be interesting to see your new site. Keep me informed, eh?

Yeah, well I guess I just meant a moderation system like that of Slashdot. =-) The one they set up there is very innovative and has influenced systems of other sites. I'll let you know when I have the site up with a mission statement and volunteer staff applications and such. I'm also announcing the name on my message board once the dns system updates, so you can check my board in a couple days if you want to see what it is (or if you really want to know about it, I can send you an email about it once I announce it, but there won't be any content on it at first and so there really won't be much to see until I set up the site with a mission statement and such, and I'll definitely let you know when that happens).

Ok, so the dns system updated. The name of the TI news site that I will create is going to be Open TI and it will be located at OpenTI.org. This is consistant with the philosophy of the site, which will be somewhat on the open source side, as it will be run with Slash (see slashcode.com) and will not remove *any* comments. There will be a moderation system, though, so offtopic posts & flamebait & such will be modded down, and it will be easier to find the better posts. Preliminary information about the site and staff applications will probably be posted towards the end of this week on it, but nothing is up yet.

This post (c) Copyright me. I grant ticalc.org a non-exclusive and unlimited right to copy and use the information in this post as they wish.

Hmm. I don't know who owns post copyrights. Each author, I presume. At any rate, that is automatic.

As for a declaration of copyright, what you put is not a legal declaration. "Copyright Year Author" is a correct form, and "(C)" is meaningless, although the C in a circle you would get in HTML by using © is valid (but only that).

So I would say this post is Copyright 2001 Nathan Haines, and so it is. But it's copyrighted by me even if I don't say so.

Well, this is totally off-topic now, so I think this should be the end of this thread. But it was definately fun while it lasted. :)

Why write (c)? It doesn't take much effort to change your keyboard layout to let you type a ©.

True, but that won't necessarily show up as © on all systems. The point, anyhow, was that "(C)" doesn't mean anything, as far as legal declarations of copyright goes.

If you are capable of going to such sites yourself why does it matter if ticalc.org has the said news items?

Ticalc has to process at least 5x more files than ti-fr, so do not expect ticalc to be as fast. (But they could be faster)

Now now.... no need to be all defensive. He has a point tho, ticalc.org hasnt been updating like they usually do, and they seem to be getting slower and slower. Probably because all of the admins are getting tired of calculator stuff. Anyhow, if you see any news thats not posted on any sites, I'd do the following.

Goto tinews.net and and goto the unofficial news section. Post what youve seen, ill take a look-see at it and if its newsworthy, I'll post the news as official news [if someone else doesnt get to it first]. Hopefully ticalc.org will get out of this slump soon, who knows, maybe they are busy with school or girls or somthing :)

Plus, look for news about Open TI to come out soon. It will be a new TI news site run with Slash (see slashcode.com), that doesn't delete any messages and will have a full moderation system! It will be located at openti.org or openti.sourceforge.net, but nothing is up on the pages...yet. An unofficial news item will be posted to tinews.net when the applications are posted, and hopefully some official news on the major TI news sites as well.
