So Many Shells, So Little Time
Posted by Nick on 18 June 2000, 19:34 GMT

This is the first news item - ever - that I'm not writing in Notepad.

Xavier Vassor and Cedric Couffignal have released DoorsOS II v0.97. It's not a preview release this time, so download away. This version is a complete rewrite of the old code. Many bugs and such have been fixed, and it's optimized beyond all human comprehension. It now also supports archived libraries: in my opinion, a Very Good Thing(TM). I've had one report so far on some minor problems, but it should be working fine for the majority of you folks out there :) Download the new version for the 89 and the 92 Plus. Download the developer version for the 89 and the 92 Plus. You can find the DoorsOS II home page here.

Aaron Curtis released Yet Another Shell v1.0, or YAS, on A86 this morning. It's a preview version, but everything should work except for the TI-82 emulation. It's basically a complete rewrite that has been anticipated for [insert extremely long denomination of time here]. It also includes an external interface, known as iShell, written by Jonah "The Real Slim Shady" Cohen. And, to top it all off, he includes a Simpsons reference at the end of the docs! I'm impressed. Aren't you?

Joe "My Last Name Is Impossible To Spell And Pronounce" Wingbermuehle has released Ion v1.6. To quote the inimitable Joe, "This version fixes a bug in the ionDetect routine of the TI-83 Plus version and the TI-83 version is a few bytes smaller. Also, the source code is included with this version." That just about sums it up. With that all in mind, check this uber-fantastic shell out for the 83 and the 83 Plus.

This not said in the news, so i'll just add on line: The source code of the kernel is now available, so if someone wants to help in the development of DoorsOS, he's welcome :)
Another point, DoorsOS is now a cardware/giftware. It means that if you are using DoorsOS regularly, I would like you to send me a postcard from where you live, or any little gift that you want.
It is not much for you, but it is a great encouragment for me !

Hey Doors OS guy (sorry I can never spell your name),
Does DoorsOs work on 2.04? Does it let you run all games available for 2.03 work for 2.04? Will you plan to make the next version do that? Thanks for creating a great shell,

Sincerely,
Me

Another tests I made. (it seems DoorsOs doesn’t work very well under ams2.04)

under DoorsOs:
Bigdyna………yes
Falldown……...no(crash when you finished or you try to quit)
Jezzball……….no(same, above)
Othello2……….no(crash-doesn’t work at all)
Super Mario q…yes
Tetris…………..no(same , Othello)

Everything above works perfectly , except Othello2, Unios displays the following message: ”ROM-RESIDENT ROUTINE NOT AVAIBLE”

If you know me well enough, you know where to find my address.

If you don't, then you shouldn't be trying to find my address in the first place.

I *do* accept postcards, if you're serious, though. :)

maybe in your web site...???

yes I'm serious. I would like to send postcards to any good programmer/ti-worker out there, because they work for free and sending gifts or postcards is the only way to pay them for their big efforts. There's problem...there are too many people working...

Not writing in notepad? I would have thought you used some sort of CGI form to generate all your news...

What *are* you writting in now?

Yeah, Nick, don't you just have some form you fill out that automatically creates a news item out of your text?

Yeah, we have a CGI form, but since we write the actual article in HTML, it's a lot easier to tweak it in Notepad than in a small text box.

Also, we can load it into the browser to check for open containers and mispelled words and such. (I usually just use the CGI form, then reupdate two or three times since I almost always forget to make hyperlinks bold, hehe.)

Why don't you guys use a simple editor? Front Page does a decent job with text at least. Or are you guys completely anti Microsoft and pro Linux :)

I enjoy having complete control over my HTML. With an HTML editor, I don't know what it's doing as far as code goes.

All people should learn and understand raw HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and rudimentary PHP.

I would have to aggree with you there. I tried Front Page once... I hated it. I had no idea what it was doing... sure, sometimes I sit for hours going thru my code looking for one little tiny "misteake" that I made somewhere... but hey, I think it's a lot better to simply do it yourself. That's how I learned HTML, that's how I plan to do it the rest of my life... (3 months? maybe?)

Well, we're definately pro-Linux; after all, we use it here on our servers. :)

But the reason we manually write the news in ASCII text with HTML markup is just because it's a lot easier and a lot faster than having to worry about screwing around with some editor program.

Yes. I can say that it would be impossible for us to make Frontpage or any web page composer/editor do the kinds of layouts and formatting that we use here. Straight html is the way to go for control. It also is a lot faster once you learn it.
