Virtual TI Surpasses ZShell For Most Downloaded File
Posted by Steve on 20 May 2000, 03:20 GMT

Virtual TI just passed ZShell v4.0 in the top downloaded files list. Each file has close to 50,000 downloads - 10,000 more than the third most downloaded file. ZShell has held this record from the time ticalc.org was created. Without ZShell, ticalc.org and the TI calculator community would not exist. VTI has made great progress over the past year and has been trailing ZShell for quite some time. Congratulations to Rusty Wagner for this outstanding achievement.

Update (Nick): Here's some added information I was going to put in my news post, but Steve got the drop on me. Enjoy! :)

In the four years that ticalc.org has been around, ZShell has *always* been the top download. It was almost a fixation on our site. The original ZShell page was merged into ticalc.org at the beginning of the site, so it's no surprise that it would rank among the most popular files.

For those of you who don't know, ZShell was created by our very own Magnus Hagander, Dan Eble, and Rob Taylor. It was the very first assembly shell for the 85, and without it, you probably wouldn't ever see assembly-based programs for any calculator. Ever.

Virtual TI is made by Rusty Wagner. VTI will emulate any TI graphing calculator (except the 81, 80 and 73) on your computer. Over the past months and years, it has become an indespensible tool for programmers, developers, and the staff of this very site.

As of this posting, 17.0% of our users do not know what ZShell is.

Update (Nathan): Uh, Nick... you screw up our precise, scientific survey results when you put in an explanation of ZShell on the main page. ;) ZShell was a tremendous victory for calc hackers--at least VTI is another massively successful programming feat. Fitting that it is a platform on which ZShell can be kept alive as TI-85 sales dwindle...

I'd just like to say congrats to Rusty on a great program! It's no surprise to me that it's passed ZShell, considering that most (all?) of the developers for TI calcs use it.

Looking at the news post here, I think that ticalc.org should host live Java run arguements - have arguement rooms - choose sides at the beginnning - I suppose you could call it debate though - it would be awesome - have one side argue the merits of hwd2 and the other hwd1 - then have a room for pro asm and pro basic - you could get some good stuff going - then you say "that is what #ti adn stuff is for" - well i don't use that and i would imagine there are many others who don't as well - I think it would be neat to try and if you guys don't have the bandwidth to host it - i'm sure you could find someone who does!

Lets get that Java System so we can discuss that :)
Seriously I agree, but 'Don't post general feedback or criticism about the site. Instead, contact us through email' So send that mail off to ticalc.org!

Okay. This really does suck.

I have a text file, typed up, currently sitting open in a Notepad window on Heatfactory at home.

In about a half-hour I would have posted it.

As a result, you'll be seeing a slightly *ahem* different news item when I get home (I'm still at my friend's house) unless circumstances dictate otherwise.

Confidential to Steve: I told the staff list that I had already written a news item for just this purpose!
GAH! You'll have your many days in the sunshine after about July or so, so wait =)

Know what? I couldn't help but notice that you deleted a comment from a dissenter about your possibly replacing the news post. I think that the comment didn't have much of a base but I really think that you should stop deleting comments. The trolls and the flaimbait are always good for a laugh or two.

And to top that, the post was from a ticalc.org STAFF MEMBER. What gives? I read the post and found nothing wrong with it, other than the fact that it might have made Nick feel silly about his post (which was probably his intention when he wrote it).

Frankly it struck me as quite immature and inappropriate, and even violated the posting guidelines. And because it was posted by a ticalc.org staff member, all the more reason to delete them; staff posts should be held to a HIGHER standard.

And remember:
- "Don't insult or flame other people in your comments. Keep such sentiments to private email, or better yet, avoid them completely."
- "Don't post asking why a comment was deleted; we deleted it because we felt it was in violation of these guidelines. If you need more of an explanation, please Contact Us."

Lol, and that "Confidential to Steve"..? Honestly sounds a little like Microsoft with their 'trade secrets' (referring to the Kerberos document).

A "confidential" can also mean that you're "confiding" information to someone. It's not necessarily a bad thing: it just means that it's supposed to be a private communication.

...thus illustrating the irony of my posting a "confidential" on the front page of the site :)

I wonder how someone could be so ignorant. What comes next? Down with calculator sites? Down with TI calculators? Just because ZShell isn't the best shell any more doesn't mean you have to discredit the authors that way. ZShell was, and still is, a GREAT achievement, just as VTI.

Anyone else think that he was just being sarcastic? Lol, sounds like all of you took that comment very serious. And that person's url is of a programming group with asm programs.

There were, however, a few comments that might have had more of a basis:

Future OS for Usgard w/Ti-85's

O.K. Ti-85 user's, if you use Usgard, and you want it to look more like a Ti-86 shell (ASE, YAS, Rascall, ETc.)

Just go to my website, and download Future OS.

There's a standard version stuffed full of features...and a lite version with the Folder necessities.

Come On, what are you waiting for, make the Ti-85 live again. :)

Yeah, it was derived from the "Cool Shell" by Andreas Ess with permission of course! But why not make something cool, even better?
