TI Unveils New Software, Future Concepts
Posted by Nick on 17 April 2000, 22:56 GMT

Miles Raymond gots tha goodz on us this evening, folks. We're talking hardcore. :)

TI has recently issued a press release that:

  • creates a network between students, teachers and the Internet
  • allows students to communicate with the teacher, using the teacher's PC as a server
  • announces the planning of more FLASH apps in the future.

The third one isn't that big a shock to anyone (at least, it's not to me *g*), but the first two are big. We're talking downright gargantuan. I recall many, many people trying - unsuccessfully - to network TI's together, and this looks like it could be the ticket.

I WANT MY 32-PLAYER ZTETRIS! :)

*News Flash*
"TI-Network" software cracked. With an 18k assembly program, students can exploit a bug in the server software which will give them complete control over all communications. TI has released a press report stating that they are working on a patch.

I remember how AMS 2.03 and the patch for AMS 2.03 were back-to-back news items on here.

How ironic.
How piquant!

Update: beta testers at the TI building staged a mass coup of TI's network in the above way mentioned, downing the server and incorporating a new business of manufacturing games for TI calculators.

Well, who am I kidding? I wish :-P

TI has released a patch that will give control of the TI-Network back to the teachers. However, a mysterious Denial of Service (DoS) attack has prevented most teachers from going online and downloading the patch.

By the way, where is the FLASH SDK for the TI-89? Anyone care to explain why they put that off?

My guess would be MONEY!!!! Isn't everyone money hungry now? I suppose they want to get more dough from the new USB cable and flash software. Either that or they like to see us squirm.

I would attribute the problem to a possible mistake made by TI's website proofreader.

The following typos should be corrected:

"FLASH" should be replaced with "THERE WILL NEVER BE"
"SDK FOR" should read "AN SDK FOR ANY CALCULATOR"
"THE TI-89" changes to "OTHER THAN THE TI-83+."
and finally, "EARLY 2000" was a misspelling of
"PLEASE BUY OUR OTHER CRAPPY FLASH APPS INSTEAD."

In addition, the website editor would like to announce that the working page title "TI Developers World" has more appropriately become "Cajunguy, Ericman2000, and Michael Carty Can Go To Hell", complete with a gif animation of satan laughing and waving a TI-83+.

;)

Pretty much, yeah. TI promised us ASM capability when we bought the calculator, and that DOESN'T MEAN DOORS--they can hardly charge us for a product they haven't written and don't control. That means an SDK, and so far it looks like we were screwed.

I'm sure we all want 32-player ZTetris, but most of us are realistic. I personaly wouldn't play multi-player ZTetris using the TEACHER'S computer as a server.

My teacher mentioned this networking setup a few weeks ago at a T3 conference. I think it'll be called the Odyssey, or something like that. I wonder how all those cables in the room will work... When will we be getting multi-calc radio networks?

At my local community college they're integrating technology into the classroom starting with the new buildings. At every student chair there is a phone line for laptop computers to hook up to. These classrooms are very nice compared to the old ones-comfortable chairs and a theatre style layout for the students to sit in.

There would probably be something like in most modern computer labs--wires duct-taped to the ground and going up to the ceiling, then to the teacher's "server."

Abouta month ago there was a string on TI-Hardware that talked about TI-Calculator radio and laser links. We got into talking about vaporizing birds. Look that up in TI-Calc's archives.

if i remember right (in which i do) didn't we decide that lasers are out of the question becuase of the rain (and for vaporizing birds) take too much power, and cause their just plain too hard to aim? or is my memory going?

speaking of networking calcs, what kind of wire exactly is the link wire that comes with the calculators? UTP? STP? Coaxial?

whats the point?
really. At my school at least the teacher has never
found it necessary to distribute any ti software or anything and for teaching how to use calcs they just use the overhead doohicky.

this is an incredably simple desighn a calc link (not utp stp or coaxle remember were doin like 2600bps dont quote that) just have a bunch of slow "computers connected to a bigger probsably a 486 through a parralel connection or "usb" ohhh or somthing and since youve got lets say 32 calcs the total speed going to the comp is like 32*2600=83200kbits thats less than a 56kbytes modem it wont be that hard i think its a good idea but it gives the techers a bit more power can spy on you during tests to see if your using a helper prog......if i here enough demand and people willing to help me with some of the calcuator proggramming i could do it myself fairly eaisy. the schematics arnt that hard......
