Start-up Customization for the 83 Plus
Posted by Nick on 8 December 1999, 23:46 GMT

TI has announced an interesting new feature for 83 Plus calculators: a free FLASH application that allows you to start your calculator up with a picture or a program displayed. It will run the picture or program in question every time the calculator is started up. It will be available in late December. You can get more information here.

First Comment?

Anyways, sounds good. . .is it possible for us (the programming populus) to program such applications? Would that require 'hacking' into the 83+ or is it open already.

Off the topic, how long does ticalc.org wait in between updates for programs via e-mail? Just wondering when my game will be released.

Yes, you can program your own applications if you buy TI's SDK for the TI-83 plus. Their free version will not let you make flash applications.

Oh yeah... another thing. Be sure to check out the link to TI's page about the app. Try out those "demo" links... I thought those "virtual calculators" (or whatever they were supposed to be) were pretty funny...

Alright. its time someonw came out and said this. Ti-Calc really is is overdue for some new administration. I mean damn, everytime TCPA hastiliy cranks out with yet another assembly beta puzzle game. However, TWICE i have applie for them to host my software site,
http://
homes.acmecity.com/tv/tuesday/64/ti.html
DiR-Ti, and i believe they denied it purely because of the content of the games.

That's odd, when i started this i actually had a cohesive argument assembled. Oh well. alright TiCalc yer not that bad. but until you commies host my site im just going to mindlessly rant for awhile.

Hey by the way, visit me site everyone, tell me what you think, and if you really like it, flood ticalc with letters like "we want to see more nasal sex™!" and such. damn the man.

This is just lame. I personaly would not want this. I have made a similar ASM program for the TI-89 that displays a picture on the background on every TI-OS screen (that means you can't play ASM games, but if you do you just run the program again). It works using grayscale so the TI-OS is still black and the picture is a light gray.

So what? We are talking about the TI-83+, not the TI-89. Besides, this gives users of BASIC a certain assembly capability not otherwise available to them. I think it's a very good idea.

Third post! I’m teasing.
It might be interesting to make it run some security program that won’t let you back into the TI-OS unless you enter a password first. The only slight problem is that this might get a little bit annoying.

Yeah that's true. In fact, this will probably mark the first time a BASIC program can be used for password protection. Right now, BASIC programs do not have the means to start a program with the ON button. Only assembly can come close to that.

Basic can't be used for password protection anyhow... The ON button functions to break any basic program that is rumming... so would really lock ut your calculator at all... However, I could seee some nifty start up basic scrolling texts, like my name flashing on the screen when i turn it on.... would be useful if i ever drop my calculator in a bin of identical calculators and need my specific one back

Ya know what also works well? Printing off about 20 labels with your name on it and pasting them on various parts of your calculator :). My 86 is begining to look like a used skateboard, with all these stickers :)

I have about 15 with my name on it, a warning label I found on a laser pen, it reads "Caution: The Device Is A Laser, Do Not Point At Eyes!". Some others include a self adhesive stamp (American Flag), and the logo of a website I used to have the priviledge of working on.

Oh, and thanks to Nick for the groovey iMac-ish case(s).

Ha ha ha, me too! On my 83 cover I put a Pokémon sticker (even though I'm not a fan) and a label sticker I accidentally made when I printed out a whole encyclopedia arcticle about Daniel Webster on label paper instead of normal paper... on my 86 I have a "10-10-811" sticker over the part at the top that says "TI-86" and a Bugs Bunny sticker on the battery case cover... on my 82 cover I put a sticker from a deodorant stick that says "ELIMINATES ODORS, Not A Cover-Up!" Ha ha, get it? Not a *cover* up? Ha ha ha- what's that? I should shut up now? Ok.

Anyway, related to the topic... I think this is a pretty cool app, but I'd rather see it programmed by a calc user and not TI. This reminds me of that prog for the 86 that lets you display a pic in the background on the home screen... I think it was called Background 86 or something like that. Now that was a good idea. ;) Ok, I've been rambling on too long now...

Oh yeah... the laser pointer sticker is a cool idea... I've been wondering what I should do with mine...

On my b0rk3d 85 is pi written to (I think) 844 decimal places. No, that hasn't been memorized (though I know pi to 50 by heart *g*).
My 86 had "If you steal my calculator, I will hunt you down and cut your black heart out with my swiss army knife. And I will get away with it." cut in the back with my swiss army knife's large blade. It has since been sold to what could possibly be the looniest psycho in the school.
On my 89's old case, I wrote, in white-out pen, the entire lyrics to "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally" by Nine Inch Nails. The current case, the translucent gray as mentioned before, has nothing on it. I doubt I'm going to embellish it because adding stuff to a translucent case makes it look really bad on the other side.
*shrug*

Only 50 digits ha ha I know 120 memorized though I would like to get those 844 I memorized the 120 in about a day cause of my photographic memory.

Anyway this program sounds kind of neat but TI is usually really slow about releasing things.

Can/Will you e-mail me the 844 digits sometime this week? That'll give me something to do over vacation. :)

you can get millions of digits of pi from any number of web pages. just search on yahoo for pi. I think one ftp even has 2 billion digits for public download (they had up to 5 billlion, but you had to arrange that specially)
personally, I only know 31, but that is impressive enough to most people. besides, you only need 30 digits to calculate the circumference of the known universe from its radius to an accuracy smaller than the width of a hydrogen atom.

<OFFTOPIC>Hey, I have 2 of those "Warning this is a laser not a flash light don't put it in your eye" labels on my '86's battery case too. I figured it wasn't doing much good on my laser, and it might keep ppl from opening the case and pulling out batteries.
</OFFTOPIC>
But anyway, this new app looks nice, but since when did TI ever care about games? I mean, what's the point of have Quadform popup at every calc start? It could only be used like for a shell, a password program, or a name thing. I think that TI is going soft on us, or rather the '83+ owners!

ps, I have an '86, '89, my brother has an '83+ and I have had a '82 and '83 as well.

I made a BASIC password lock on the 89 - used try...else...endtry to catch the "break" error and go back. That still doesn't totally do it, though.

couldn't someone just use the editor to easily find what the password is (or use calcsys to unlock that prog, THEN check it :P)?

True, but you can make it run a password program written in assembly. You can also put a password at the begining of a basic program that would make the program exit unless the correct password is entered. The program would have to be edit locked though. At my school, I only give people programs that can protect (not unprotect) other programs, that way they can't steal my code like they used to.
