PuzzPack v1.0 Released by TCPA
Posted by Nick on 4 December 1999, 06:54 GMT

PuzzPack v1.0TCPA has released another TI-83 Plus FLASH application today called The TCPA Puzzle Pack. It contains four of the puzzle games created by members of TCPA: Yoshi, Block Dude, Tetris Attack, and Pegs. This application was programmed and organized by Jason Kovacs. "The purpose of creating this flash app," Jason says, "is to collaborate the efforts of the TCPA, allowing the programs to share code and minimize the amount of memory used for them. We wanted to release our games in this more professional form since applications are officially signed by Texas Instruments themselves."

Yep, TI does indeed support games, as it sells calculators.
(They also obviously support math and stuff)

But WHY would TI sign somthing that contained copyrighted and trademarked material? I think Nintendo or that company that makes tetris could sue TI for that! (you need to pay royalties to use the name tetris or word-that-ends-with-tris)

What's next? TI signing 'Super Mario Bros 83+'? Lawsuit.

TI didn't expect ZShell to be created when they released the 85.
And if they did.... well, damn they're good :-)

Actually, on the tetris matter:

I truely don't think that the word "Tetris" is protected by law (either by copyright, trademark, or registered trademark) anymore. It's because all these companies, including Nintendo, and persons creating Tetris-apps for the computer do not have anything in common.

The original tetris maker, I am sorry, but do not recall his name, although I've met him personally, probably doesn't care about the use of Tetris and -tris words. (He's a Russian guy, I think his name was Alex something...)

Alexey Pajhitnov. I don't know if the spelling on the last name is right. :)

how do flash apps differ from normal programs (other than the obvious facts about staying on calc after reset)? Do they still need enough ram to run?

They do need a certain amount of ram to run but they don't need the size of the program plus 2k to run. The flash apps run in the way a game on CD-ROM does. It reads what it needs out of the flash memory. It works just like the os on the calculator only it takes about 2k free to run, this is why they don't get lost if the calculator gets reset while running them, unlike ION games. Again just like a computer, you can have only 128mb of ram on your computer and run a 1 GB program.

cool, someone should try gettin joltima on flash, then my dumb nephew would stop whining about me not lending him my 86 :P

(btw that wasnt a post DEMANDING a port, but merely a nice dream of not being bugged)

Reno is right, the flash apps could be the way to get large progs (over 8 kb) onto the 83.

It would be very difficult to port Joltima to the 83+, due to the limitations on the OS. Flash apps can only be 16k, and that is not enough to fit the game in. Fitting it on two pages would be a terrible waste of space.

Okay, this looks good, but i just wanna know 2 things... is it gonna mess up my calculator or is it a bug free thing?

If it isn't bug free, it will probly do the same thing they would do if it was being run in ION. Pretty much the same risks. Of course maby when TI signs it they test it for all bugs first.

I can't say for sure that the App is bug free, but it has been extensively tested by myself and other TCPA members. I do not expect for this to crash anyone's calculator, but there could still be some logic errors within the games that I haven't caught yet. If anyone finds something, then report it to me at the above address, and I'll make the change for version 1.1... TI has assured me signings for any minor updates that need to be done, so that's good, but I'm pretty sure that won't be needed...

Wow, as I don't have an 83+ I can't play this app, but it sounds great! I have played the individual games on the 83 though and they are very good! (Especially Tetris Attack!) TCPA really seems to be doing a great job! Keep up the good work TCPA!!

At least there is someone else that appreaciates the work of TCPA and isn't it strange that it is someone who doesn't even have an 83+. Most of you 83+ owners say things like, these games suck and so on. If they suck so much why don't you try making or porting some games you consider good.

Back on topic:
You can always download ti's simulator from their site the only thing is that if a game requires you to press 2 buttons at the same time it won't work correctly. I have ION on my simulator as well as my 83+.

simulators? Where do you get that from?

Nevermind, I found it. I just can't seem to get a program to load onto the simulator. I can get the calculator to run and do math problems, I just can't load a program. I only wish TI would have included some kind of documentation.

Try checking all the menus, I forget which one it is, it says load app, program, and os in it.
