New Sidebars Added: Featured Programs, Top Downloads
Posted by Nick on 10 November 1999, 01:11 GMT

We have added two new sidebars that you can view on the right side of the front page. The first one contains a randomly selected list of recently featured programs. The second contains a list of the top downloaded files this week (in order, I think :)). Note that if you have the front page customized in any way that these don't show up by default, and that you will have to go to Preferences to add them to the front page.

The comments below are written by ticalc.org visitors. Their views are not necessarily those of ticalc.org, and ticalc.org takes no responsibility for their content.

Time to put ticalc.org's decision to not delete comments to the test. :)

Everyone, go to the webpage in the URL above for this comment. It's a nice description of the real ticalc.org, written by our very own Kirk Meyer. It's a "worth read".

That's off-topic, Bryan. But you of course know that we are only deleting terribly obscene things for now.

Its not off-topic. It has direct reference to this site. What's the problem, are we scared to bring the truth to light?

It's off-topic because it has no direct reference to the news story. :P

As for the web page, I noticed several opinions that are based on faulty assumptions (others are true--I'll not list either type here, because I'll forget some). But I'll refrain from comment, as some things mentioned were before I was hired, but anyhow, I disagree with the overlying tone of the essay.

Well, obviously you disagree with the main tone of the essay. If you agreed with it, Chris would have a nice, long e-mail in your box about now.

Yep. It's off topic. I wasn't exactly happy to see it there myself, since if somebody wants to read it, they can click on my (Web Page) link and read it.

Bryan, right now you make me sad. This post is totally irrelevant to the topic, and it's biased and opinionated. Why didn't you post this during the anarchy trial? The only reason why your post wasn't deleted was because Nathan replied to it with a substantiated comment.

The "anarchy trial" is still going on, until ticalc.org decides that they are going back to the old system.

And Kirk just put this up last night, that's why I post it now.

The reason it wasn't deleted is because they said they won't delete it until they come to a decision about the comment boards.

*cough*Finally, the anarchy trial is now over, but we'll only delete posts which contain excessively inappropriate or crude language until we make our final decision. Thanks to everyone who participated. :)*cough*

By the tone of your comment, it sounds like you've dreaded the entire trial period and you are looking forward to the day when strict moderation will once again rule. Am I correct?

My quoting a news item verbatim doesn't give "tone" to anything. Stop trying to start a fight for once.

How about you post Kirk's article to the main page, like you do so many other *important* news items. I think this is as newsworthy as the Comment Board trial, and i think it would be beneficial to read unmoderated commments on the subject, not only for the use of ticalc.org but also for the public benefit.

Ok. So. Late response, but still, a response.
Posting this on the front page would violate our guidelines about site wars. Therefor, we will not post it.
If there are a *lot* of people out there who really want to hear our side of this (again), you may also contact me with requests, and we'll reconsider posting both stories (Kirks and a response) as news. However, last time we did this, the majority of our users said we shouldn't.

I don't see how Kirk's essay is about site wars. Doesn't it take two sites to have a war? I only see one site mentioned in Kirk's essay.

Also, what do you mean a majority of your users? Do you actually have a finite number of users and you found the percentage of users that said you shouldn't post your side?

I don't see a need for ticalc.org to post my site as news, especially considering the content. They _do_ have the right to keep stuff that is critical of them off these comment boards (as long as they make that a comment guideline) but DEFINITELY they have the right to keep it off their main news! If people want to read it, they will click my (Web Page) link. Otherwise, they will not read it. Simple.

You know, Bryan, you make me wonder sometimes. If you hate ticalc.org so much, why do still use it? There ARE other TI sites out there. Perhaps you and Kirk could start your own page and dominate the calculator market.

There are some people at ticalc that actually work hard. Look at Nick and all the news items that gets posted. He works faster than TI news does - except on that 86 zip program.

There are only a few points that I agree with you and Kirk on: There are too many programs in the archives. Many (especially in the BASIC directories) are just rip-offs of others. Ticalc should test all programms to check for originality. Second, I, too, find it odd that ticalc.org members can use emulators without owning the calculators - if in fact this is true.

There are no really good TI calculator sites out there.

News items aren't that hard to post. :)

ticalc.org has a special informal agreement with TI so they can use the ROMs without actually owning the calculators. This wasn't a problem for me because I own all the calculators. :)
