Comment Board Anarchy Trial Survey
Posted by Nick on 8 November 1999, 01:48 GMT

For those of you who don't have your survey box turned on or those of you who haven't noticed yet :), the anarchy trial survey has been posted. We would like to encourage as many people as possible to voice their opinions on this issue; even people who don't use the comment board often or at all. This survey will be open for one week, and the results will be posted after the survey is closed. We hope that this survey can help us form a logical and intelligent opinion on this issue, and we hope that you folks out there will understand our position.

Finally, the anarchy trial is now over, but we'll only delete posts which contain excessively inappropriate or crude language until we make our final decision. Thanks to everyone who participated. :)

What is the exact reason for not showing the results of the survey yet?

That's what I was going to ask. I voted for trial #2, but I still think there should be restrictions. I feel that if comments are inappropriate, but constructive, like an off-topic comment or something, they should not be deleted. If there is excessive vulgar language then they should be removed, but what's the harm in a single swear word? We've all heard them before, and they are an integral part of every language. That's just the way I feel.

I agree that off topic comments shouldn't be deleted. Many times a comment may be informational or just interesting but off topic. There is no need for the staff the search through all these comments and delete them.

Comments that are intentionally destructive or very vulgar should be deleted. If a user constantly posts these types of comments, they should be banned. The staff should not be forced to constantly remove these types of comments from the same user.

If you don't want to be banned, there's a very simple solution. Use some brains when posting you comments.

Why should the ticalc.org staff have to waste time scanning posts to look for bad words and stuff? Let this be total anarchy, and they should spend their time updating archives and doing things people actually care about.

Um, except for helpmail (and FAQ) and the occasional sanity-check of the "Other Sites" section, my job IS to scan posts for language and intelligence.

I don't do archives or anything, so a total anarchy system would not make me free to do other things. I actually don't need to devote a large amount of time to news items, anyhow.

This post is a good reason why ticalc should have at least one "anarchy board" (see my post on the survey results page).

IMHO, that's a good reason why we should have mailing lists. And we do. :)

Which mailing list are they supposed to ask that on? If they ask it on assembly-89, people get mad at them because they think assembly-89 is for programmers only, not for people who need help installing the programs (this isn't TI-89 only, it's all the assembly-_ _ lists). It's also somewhat of a hassle to try to subscribe to mailing lists, especially for a beginner.

Hey, could anyone explain to me about this anarchy survey thing. I never quite understood what its purpose was. Thanks

It's a debate over how ticalc should handle off-topic or inappropriate (swearing or flaming) posts. Anarchy means that the message boards will be totally uncensored, and the other option means that these posts will be deleted.

What I think...

I think that everyone that posts something like "First Comment" or "Second Comment" or even "400th Comment" should have there post deleted and they should not be allowed to post for a month. Then they should also be forced to give their home phone number which should be posted on the site so everyone can call them and scream "j00 l4m4h".

I think that people who write things like "j00 l4m4h" should be banned for a month and have their home phone number given out.

Maybe posts should be numbered, like all posts start out with "nth comment", like "1st comment"

They deleted all of our posts because they specifically wanted a fair vote, not a "let's see what other people vote for..." vote. Publically stating what we voted for contradicted what they wanted. Maybe they could allow message boards for survey results iff the person voted, and if not, hide the results (and the message board) until that person votes. That would make all of the surveys fair and would cause people to vote only for what they actually thought and not on others' opinions.
