TI-OS 2.53 Released for TI-84+ Family
Posted by Nikky on 15 February 2010, 18:30 GMT

MathPrint ScreenshotTexas Instruments has released a significant OS upgrade for the TI-84+ family of calculators. Version 2.53MP was made available for download earlier today at TI's official website, and appears to contain significant changes to the operating system. Also updated were manuals to reflect the OS changes, and Catalog Help was upgraded to version 1.1. A preview version of 2.53MP was allegedly leaked to community members, and multiple sites have reported

Features of 2.53MP include:

  • MathPrint, which provides functionality similar to the PrettyPrint application. TI notes that "With MathPrint, educators and students can input and view math symbols, formulas and stacked fractions exactly as they appear in textbooks."
  • A "two page" MODE menu to access MathPrint options.
  • MathPrint allows the use of basic copy/paste for recalling past calculations by scrolling through the output.
  • Multiple new hooks and 96 additional bcalls.
MathPrint Screenshot WikiTI has been updating a page documenting new features, bugs, and incompatibility issues. Notable highlights include:
  • All programs using the home screen will most likely be broken if MathPrint is enabled.
  • MathPrint cannot handle overly complex equations.
  • Omnicalc and CalcUtil experience significant runtime issues.
  • Users are reporting that many BASIC programs are significantly slower.

As with any significant OS update, users are encouraged to try the new features and to test compatibility with 3rd party software. It is important to restate that many BASIC programs are experiencing major slowdown issues, and casual users may want to refrain from updating at this time if they run BASIC programs. If you do choose to upgrade, please share your experiences!

Update 2 (02/28/2010): Andy Kemp provides a nice writeup of the new features.

It surely won't run.

We've allready investigated the problem on UTI.

The problem is hardware, not software.

Look at the letter at the end of your serial number.
Every hardware revision H and above will fail with TI-Boy SE.
You must have a hardware revision G or below.

Well, to be more specific, if it can run on your calculator with the old OS, it will run on the new OS just fine.

I loaded it, Poke Red works fine.

If it worked with the old one, it will work on the new OS. If it didn't work before, it never will unless you buy an old SE off ebay or something

I installed the OS. I don't so much programming anymore, so it doesn't affect me that much. The "pretty print" style is nice, especially for getting answers.
Also, some of the new functions are quite useful. You can now do logs of bases other than ten (without a program) and find the remainder of a division problem.
Besides the fractions, the carat-exponent is changed, as well as the root.
About the slowness, I experienced none of that with my BASIC program. It doesn't use the homescreen, so I don't know about that.

All in all, a much better update than past OS's. Way to go TI!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there was a way to do logs of different bases on the 83/84/+/se/ family before this update. However, it may now be much easier and more explicit to do with the new update, but I haven't gotten a chance to test this out so I'm just basing this on memory.

It's good to see that TI is doing a few things of note that aren't aimed at killing the opensource programming community surrounding their products /end soapbox statement.

You are right, there was no "easy" way to do it, besides the change of base formula...

Overall, I think it was a good update for non-programmers, but I kinda wish I saved an old version of the OS, as it doesn't play well with Shells

no problem.

I also noticed that, on my calc at least, if you crash it 4 or 5 times (like with Omnicalc's entries menu), it will freeze up the next time its started. holding buttons for about 1 second makes it work, but you can't turn it off. Resets don't help. After a day, it goes away.
Don't know if its just my calc or not, but its annoying.

um... hello?

is it just me? or does xLib not run properly on this new os either???

i am not sure because i never tried xlib before anyways... but today i decided to try a program that requires xlib... but it simply doesn't work...

as in ... even after i made sure many times that i have enabled XLib, the program would always still simply say (please enable xlib) or other basic programs would simply crash...

kk... just making sure...

since i just tested it with Celtic III as well...

and that seems to kinda work... but all th programs are messed up in graphics and controls... so it could be either Celtic is not compatible with those programs, or perhaps its the new OS working its evils again...

The graph thing is a bug. Some apps have hooks that muck up the ALPHA+F1-F4 shortcut menus.
