ticalc.org Hiring Again
Posted by Michael on 5 September 2008, 20:47 GMT

We need new staff members to handle our file archiving. You could be one of the people we're looking for.

The main thing required here is time. We get many files submitted every day, and it is important that they be processed as quickly as possible.

Experience with multiple calculators is a big advantage; we try not to put a preference on any calculator model or platform. Owning a lot of calculators is not required, but having some general experience is a plus.

We're looking for a long term commitment, as well as a high availability. You all know what our users think when there are weeks without updates. If you can work 8 hours a day now, but expect not to be able to keep that up for more than a couple of months, this is not what we want. Expect it to be quite time-consuming, but certainly rewarding. Once you're familiar with our system, file archiving usually takes an average of 5 minutes per file. We get about 30 to 80 files submitted per week, depending on the season.

Finally, if you can increase the staff's demographical diversity, that's a plus, but not a requirement. We encourage people, both male and female, from all countries to apply.

If you're interested, contact us at newstaff@ticalc.org. Please include the following information:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Preferred IM screen name and protocol (AIM, MSN, etc.)
  • Age
  • Current level of education (finished or unfinished)
  • Where you live (town/state/country)
  • Approximate amount of time you think you can contribute per week
  • Which calculators you have experience with or access to
  • A quick explanation of why we should pick you

Also, based our previous experience, it's worth mentioning that this is not a paid job.

Applications are due on Friday, September 19, 2008.

quite honestly, the time expected to put into this job don't seem to have any correlation with amount of time the ticalc.org staff put into actually selecting the new staff from the candidate pool. Every time this has happened in the 4.5 years I've been hanging around this site, dozens of committed TI community members apply, and do not even receive a "thank you" for their application, while a couple of people get hired, have their interview in secret, and then disappear into the unknown once again. If the ticalc.org staff spent a little more time reviewing their applications, staffing the file archives wouldn't be such a perennial problem.

very true. A lot of people who would have done the job well has never got a response to their application and one who got hired even got fired because he wasn't fast enough. Well, to me, I would rather see someone only be able to approve 3 files a day than seeing the archive with only monthly updates because there are no more staff to approve them

I have been feeling exactly the same way. If I ever do file archiving, my main goal would be at least to do a little at a time fairly frequently even if I were very busy with other things so that the users would at least know we're alive instead of holding their breaths wondering if ticalc.org is dead for good this time.

of the two who got hired last time, one disappeared right afterwards, and calc84maniac (iirc), just got fired because "he was too slow"

the hirings were never even announced publicly, and Astrid Smith (the reviews editor) got stuck doing archiving too.

Pseudoprogrammer, not calc84maniac (unless calc84 got hired then fired too?)

Yeah, it's a cool place.

Hiring is done first quietly, to make sure that the new staff member works well with the rest of the staff and is able to complete their duties effectively. I don't know about why the other two provisional staff members didn't make it.

Also, I didn't get "stuck" doing filearchive. Michael V does most of the FA these days; I was trained in FA this summer because I was curious.

Agreed.

I'd apply but I only have about 15 minutes a day to spare.

I hope someone reads this.

It may be easier in the long run to have an AUTOMATED filing system... so no manual labor is necessary..

JUST A THOUGHT!

I think the website should to hire many archivers. If they do all 10 minutes of the day with 6 archivers that is more than the website needs. I think this would be most easyest for all.

Help! Whenever I try to send programs to my 84+ SE, it says 'Access is denied'. No matter what I send, it doesn't work.

Reboot your computer and unplug/replug your calc. And, retry, retry, retry. If that still doesn't work, reinstall Ticonnect

It looks that TICalc.org got a good file archiver! I'm seeing new files every day. Keep up the good work!

No, the application process isn't even completed yet (you have one more day to submit your application).

Does there appear to be a lot of interest in this position this time around?

It's past the deadline, but if there are any other positions (or if you need another person to split the load) I'm available to do some of the spillover work.

Also, when is the Nspire going to get a section in the archives for documents?

Not until it has decent programming capabilities. As for now its programming capabilities are too limited to even do a decent math program from what I remember

yeah it appears ticalc.org is going the way calc.org did (minus the data wipe).

They're almost there. The decision has already been made; they're just waiting for Magnus to set up the account so they can train the new file archiver.

You must be one of them then, because they generally don't communicate with those who aren't hired.
