Astrid Smith Joins ticalc.org
Posted by Michael on 8 September 2007, 22:46 GMT

We are pleased to announce that Astrid Smith has joined the ticalc.org staff. Astrid will be the resident evil grammatist overlord, err, reviews editor. She will also be in charge of surveys and assisting with the site in general. Astrid is already rapidly gaining fame as having one of the most interesting staff biographies.

Yay, my reviews have finally been published. Thanks! That should motivate me to write some more.

I just now noticed that people like Nick D. and Andy Selle are now *former* staff. I didn't know that—did I miss a news article way back or something?

Wow, two news articles in 3 days! That hasn't happened since... ummm... 3 articles ago. Damn, that comment didn't really end up having the point it was meant to have.

I am questionning myself as for why is there so few comments on news articles lately at this time of the year... even calcgames doesn't get much replies either

School is starting perhaps? Last year's seniors have left for college and HS/MS freshman are still figuring out how to turn their calc on...

With each new school year, sports/clubs start again, and so I personally have less time to program or come here...

well in the past 6 years I've been here school starting meant activity peak period on almost all TI sites, including this one. In late 2002 most news got near 300-800 comments

Yeah, this is true. Students are using calculators more than ever, so what's the problem? I find it hard to believe that students no longer play games on their calculators in class.

Maybe forums and comments boards has became less popular because of spambots (altough over here there is no spambots yet, I doubt anyone will write a bot script just for ticalc.org) or for other reasons and IRC may have became the thing. When i came back on tcpa for a month recently there was nearly 60 people in the channel and 2 years ago there was an average of 35. Even TI-Freakware, UTI and Omnimaga channels kept increasing in traffic

Yes, who needs to write a spambot when you can just hire a teenager to make PARADE and PYRAMID posts ....

Based on my own experiences, I think most students just get games from eachother. When they get them online, they just get them here and go; no point commenting on programs/people they've never heard about...

When Omnicalc came out, barely anyone at my school cared about it; it doesn't help them play games...

I find that this is definitely true. Look at the downloads of the top programs. There are several with several thousand downloads in the past 7 days, whereas this summer, I remember times when a program only needed about 150 to get on the list, and the top programs only had about 2000 downloads.

I was not here several years ago, so I don't know how the new download stats compare to the older ones.

One thing that I would like is a list of the top 5-10 programs in each section, not just the top program.
