TI-84 Plus OS v2.41 Released
Posted by Michael on 7 May 2006, 04:47 GMT

TI has released version 2.41 of the TI-84 Plus operating system. As usual, there is a vague comment that tells us nothing about what changes are new to this version. It appears that the website has not been fully updated yet, as there are references to both 2.40 and 2.41 on the download page. If you are aware of any changes in this version, please post in the comments.

Don't download and try a new 84+ OS- ever. The time I upgraded from 2.21 to 2.40 I have been unable to link to the comp ever since.

I'm sticking with 2.30, the last OS without the special safety feature. (which are there any hacks of yet?)

What would be the point of hacking it anyways? The feature actually *benefits* anybody. Teachers can now be confident (or more confident at least) that student's calculators are locked down, and now students won't have to suffer through entire memory clears--exactly what all students were asking for.

Indeed. Would students rather not be able to use a calculator at all on these tests, since they refuse to put OS 2.4[1] on their calculator? It makes no sense.

The benifit of a hack would be so the teacher is fooled into thinking the calculator has had it's premissions suspended while it really did not. That way cheating is possible.

SURE...EVERYONE wants their programs that the spent long days coding deleted...and we thought groups were safe...

LONG LIVE OS 2.30

...Uhh.... I think you're missing the whole point. We're saying that once you install OS 2.4x on your calculator, teachers won't have to clear your memory anymore. This is because teachers can now be sure that even if a student has programs on his calculator, he wouldn't be able to use it during a test.

But it doesn't matter if they clear your memory. Because on an 84+, you have all of your programs grouped, Mirage OS installed so you can block the memory menu from access, and password protect Mirage, two copies of many of your more important programs; one archived and one unarchived, with different names. And you have Omnicalc, so you can get your programs back, even unarchived.
And anyway, you have most of the source code memorized. So you can just write the programs again.

well, at my school, they never clear our calcs. if they are concerned about what we have on our calcs -- like during standardized tests, they provide calcs so it doesn't matter.

in short, they don't know and don't care about this because if it matters, they give us black calcs

To me it doesn't really matter, on the SAT's, they just look at your calc to make sure it is an approved model. They don't even turn it on!!!

I'm sticking with 2.30 too. 2.40 disappointed everyone and I'm suspicious of 2.41.

I found it *very* usefull. My parents threatened to throw my calc away (Stupid Geometry test!) and I convinced them to let me lock it down.

I assume you meant they would sell a calculator that costs more than $100 instead of throwing it away. No offense, but geometry is really so easy that I never even used a calculator in that class.

I just got it early because I would need it later.
Which brings up a thought provoking question:
If I will need it in the future and they get rid of it, what will I use when I do need it?

You never really need it. You'll get along just fine with a regular scientific calculator. In fact, once you start using a graphing calculator with programming capabilities, you will become dependent on it. After a while you really will need it. Teachers only want you to have a graphing calculator so once every month you can see how the graphs look.

but once you get into upper level mathematics, you NEED a ti. trust me. my stats teacher doesnt even make us do anything by hand anymore. problems that would take probably...2 mins on a calc, would take upwards of an hour by hand.

Not anything I've done... Pretty much nothing I've learned has required a graphing calculator at all. Everything could be done on a scientific calculator, and if you do it all on a scientific calculator, you learn the material WAY better.

And it's not like I'm in basic math or anything either... I'm a Calculus AB/AP student with an almost guaranteed 5 on the AP test (that we all just took a week ago) with an 800 on SAT II math. Of course, on harder problems, it could take over double time to solve by hand (curse those integration by parts problems =P)

Personally I would've downloaded Python and used that instead of a TI.

i didnt really NEED it in calc. but the statistical functions on it are definetly needed in stats 101 and 201. it actually has the syntax you would need on a ti for every chapter. (which by the way is completly useless thanks to ctlghelp).

is there any way to load this up on TI Flash Debugger to try it? I can't find any update feature on the debugger/emulator(sp?)

Load the OS like you would a program. Just remember that the debugger isn't perfect, so some things that happen on the calc might not happen on the debugger and some things in the debugger might not work on the calc.

Jeez, that's harsh. My mom doesn't even know how to turn my calc on, and my dad doesn't know where either the program menu, memory menu, or anything else that matters is.
Not to mention that they're very supportave of my programming; they think that I'm going to become a professional programmer, and they don't want to discourage me from that. ;)

That does not make any damned sense. Your parents threatened to take something away from you just because you can program for it? Did you get into some kind of trouble with geometry class for having it? Too little information, though I seem to be the only one dumb enough to not get it.

I made a geometry program (AGEOM (83+)), and someone in my class was caught using it, so he got a 0 for cheating. After that the teacher made me use one of her calcs (not a problem, I never used the program on tests).

I think that is why they made this new update...
Someone found a hack, they found out, and made a newer version that patches the hack!
