TI-83 Plus BASIC Math Subdirectories
Posted by Michael on 7 February 2006, 05:35 GMT

In order to better organize our archives, we have added some subfolders to the TI-83 Plus BASIC Math Programs directory. We have created algebra, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry folders. There is also now a special folder for those quintessential BASIC programs, quadratic solvers. Please make sure you upload your mathematics programs to the proper folder. General/multipurpose math programs and those in topics not covered by a subfolder will remain in the general math folder.

* The "trigonometry" and "quadratic solvers" links are missing the "basic/" part, making them 404s.
* You misspelled "geometry".

NOTE: I don't care if you delete this comment as long as you fix the errors. ;-)

I'm intentionally avoiding that one as long as possible. That's going to be interesting, as being the "miscellaneous" category it will be hard to subdivide as nicely as games/ or math/ will.

What about just dividing it alphabetically?

Well, directories are used to divide files based upon what they are, not simply what letter they start with (and doing by letter would be a huge pain anyways when names changed.)

This is better approached by updating our directory listings to use multiple pages; this is currently being planned.

Like "50 or 100 [w/e] programs per page and then a next button" seperate pages?.. or subpages as in the Math?

The ## programs per page.

Umm, they're already alphabetical...
oh you mean like _A_B_C_D_E_F_etc pages? That would be kinda clumsy to navigate.

Yeah, but each page wouldn't take five min. to load with a 56kbps modem.

ok.. try this scenario:

You're looking for a program, but you only know it by its file description name, i.e. [for lack of a better example] Super Mario v1.2. The person who uploaded this game submitted the .zip file under something along the lines of "best_program.zip". You try to find this file in the archives and you automatically go to the "S" directory.. upon failure to find the program, you figure the next logical place would be the "M" directory. Nope.. not there either. You now find yourself going through up to 26 different subdirectories in order to find one file. MAJOR waste of time.

With the files sorted by type/class, the program would definitely be in a given subdirectory, so only one page would have to be viewed to find the program.

Well, we could still have an all-on-one-page option too. And if we were to add in paging, default sort order would be by title (Super Mario) and not by filename.

The reason paging is still a good idea that tables with 1000 rows is just bad UI. It's like the answer to the classic Win32 programming question: "how do I make a list box with 100,000 items?" The answer is you don't; you find a better way to do things.

I still think it would be better to page by 50 [or 100.. doesn't matter] programs per page instead of by beginning letter, but that's just my opinion :)

Just from the first screen, you'll need a /timer or /stopwatch directory and a "/bible verses" directory. And a "/program launcher" directory (please don't call it an "OS" directory).

What about
* BASIC Communication programs (chat progs, messaging progs)
* BASIC Music programs
* BASIC Time programs (clock progs, countdown progs)
* BASIC Security programs (encryptors, passwd progs)
* BASIC Shells (for all those crappy and less crappy TI-Windowses :P)

These are distinguishable I think...

Have an 83 Time and an 84 Time directories - less people getting version errors when they send an 84 time-built-in program to their 83+.

Yeah, with that, Kaaiman's directory layout could work well. Of course, there would still need to be a "Sub-misc" section for the programs in the Misc section that didn't fit into any of the other Misc categories. ;-)
