X-Link v1.0 Released
Posted by Michael on 24 June 2005, 04:17 GMT

[X-Link] For over five years I've been waiting for the release of Brandon Wilson's 83+ flash application, X-Link. Stuck in perpetual development since 2000, X-Link allows a 83+/84+ to send and receive variables from the 85, 86, 89, 92, 92+, and Voyage 200. This could be useful for backing up non-flash calculators such as the 85 and 86.

Well, there is only one problem, the thing is that all calcs such as the 73 have less advanced functions, so I dont see how you could play pacman 3D v0.5 (see web page link for more details) but I find putting 68K games on z80 calcs especially since 68k calcs have more ram/rom then z80 calcs.

I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of this program. This does not let you play 68k games on any other calculator, it only lets you store them on a TI-83/84 Plus.

Yeah, you would need an emulator for that, which would be MUCH harder to write.

LOL, it just lets you store variables, not use 'em.

Perhaps with this we'll start seeing more cross-calculator program development, so a TI-83+ program can read/write the same files that can be read/written by the TI-89 version of the same program.

Or maybe not. I can still dream, though.

I'm going to say that the TI-84 Plus SE has by far the largest (or biggest) Flash ROM and RAM (altogether) than the lower TI calculators; the same goes for the TI-86: it's far better than the TI-85 counterparts; the TI-89 Titanium (and maybe Voyage 200?) has by far the biggest RAM and Flash ROM ever than its TI-89, TI-92/+ 68k calculators.

I should have seen or known that the programmer clarified that his X-Link version 1.0 is mentioned for the TI-83/84 Plus Family calculators. Oh well. Wished it could be ported for the other calculators as well. I hope he could implment this in the future, although I don't know if he knows any programming (BASIC, not assembly, in my opinion) on the 68k calculators or anything other than the calculators specified he programmed his calculators on here.

Again, thank you!

The V200 has the same amount of memory as the 89T.

Aaah, but what if I wanted to backup me 85 to my V200 DIRECTLY?

Someone would have to write a program for the TI-85 or the Voyage 200 to do that.

We still need a program to transmit variables we can actually use. I want to make a number on my 83+ and ship it to my v200 and use it as a number, and vice versa. I want to send v200 text files to my 83+ and have them show up in Nifty. I already plan on doing this, but it will be at least several years before I even start. (Unfortunately, programming is relatively low on my priorities list, not through any choice of mine.)

If one used a common file format between the calculators and ran a program on both ends, then it could be irrelevant which are connected.

Or we could obtain the source code to the old 68k versions of TI Graph-Link Mac and port it…

UniLink (if I ever finished it) would allow just that, but would only run on the 68K calculators. Since it is in C, it could probably be ported to the Z80-based calculators with minimal recoding, but I currently have no intention of doing that. I really would like to finish it, but it is not my top priority (right now, I am trying to make an AI & learn Old English (pre-1200's), & since it is summer, I have to help my parents around the house (unless I get a job, but that would take up even more time)).
UniLink's method is to pretend to be another calculator of the same type, so the variables can be exchanged via the Var Link screen on the guest calculator.

The question mark is one of those 'd's with a cross through the upstroke, pronounced as a 'th' in modern English. Apparently the one on my keyboard (option-d; Mac; US English) is Unicode, and therefore not supported by the ticalc.org server

Why can't the Z80 calc file formts be unified like the 68K calcs?

They are far too different. That's why they don't link with each other in the first place. Even with a REAL variable, precision becomes a problem (to respond to the post up above).
