Ivan Papusha Joins ticalc.org
Posted by Michael on 12 June 2005, 19:00 GMT

And now the moment you've all been waiting for has arrived: the unveiling of our new reviews editor!

Congratulations to Ivan Papusha, who is now responsible for proofreading and editing submitted reviews. Like our file archivers, Ivan has been working behind the scenes for a few weeks. He currently attends the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology with the goal of someday studying electrical engineering at MIT. Once again, congratulations to Ivan!

Everyone's new job is to distract Ivan from his studies by submitting copious quantities of critical, well-written reviews.

If we want to distract him, wouldn't it be better to write bad reviews with all sorts of spelling and grammar errors? Then he'd have to spend hours cleaning them up!

:-)

Anyways, congrats!

No, I don't think that would work. I'll bet you the second he sees the word "teh" he hits the delete button :)

If he's been at this site for any length of time, he'll know who to ask to write a script to check the spelling and automatically delete files with poor spelling and grammar.

Nor will I, because it would only regulate reviews, not posts.

Everyone's heard the "Weapons of Math Instruction" joke, bu I think that the Grammar Nazis are much more dangerous.

I agree--writing an automated grammar correction program that corrects the right errors nearly 100% of the time and makes nearly no mistakes wouldn't be easy.

It wouldn't correct them, it would simply delete the file on the first incorrect thing.

It would still be difficult to ensure that it wouldn't sometimes find what appears to be an error but really isn't.

Actually, the grammar checker is one of my favorite features of Word. If I had to pick one feature in Word to use to reccommend it to someone, I would pick the grammar checker.

Really? I guess it has some great humor value... I turned it off long ago because it was always "correcting" grammatically correct sentences. It's not just me (see link).

Or we could write marginally acceptable reviews that are lengthy, grammatically correct and follow a basic critique structure that would apply to any: Assembly Game, Basic Game, et cetera. While it may meet the criteria it wouldn't be unique, or seem like an original review on a file. Hence causing difficulty differentiating these reviews from authentic well thought out ones.
...much like understanding this comment (has 30 reviews in some txt file for such occasions).

Maybe you need my über-automatisch-grammatik-Nazi program. (Or script MS Word to do it.)

I just realized: using a mixture of cron scripts, bash/tcsh scripts, AppleScript, and MS Office, I could do that on Mac OS X, depending on how good Word's scripting ability is. Wow.

I don't know about you, but if I had to read though a bunch of pointless reviews night after night from the same people, I might start to catch on and delete their account.

On the other hand, who's actually going to write a review like that?

Just because I know a hundred people are going to reply with this, the reply to this post of "ME!" is banned.
