Basicbuilder v2.0 Released
Posted by Michael on 29 January 2005, 04:24 GMT

Martin Warmer has released version 2.0 of his popular utility Basicbuilder. For those of you who didn't try versions 1.x, Basicbuilder is a Windows utility that compresses TI-83 Plus BASIC programs and packages them in a flash application for convenient use. Version 2.0 has added optimizations, bug fixes, and some new features. Portions of the program have been completely rewritten for flexibility and better implementation.

As always, please remember that files created with Basicbuilder, although in flash app format, are still BASIC programs and such should be uploaded to our specific Basicbuilder directory.

That's awesome! If I had an 83 I'd get it...but 89s are awesome.

Yeah, Basicbuilder is a very neat tool.

Speaking of which, I wonder how many people have applied to replace Redux as news editor at CalcGames.org

All programs are put in RAM, so depending on how much is left the programs can run amazingly slow.

One thing that I think everyone needs to know is that under the guidelines of using BasicBuilder, if you choose to upload any of these converted BASIC program you need to include the original .8xp files in the .zip file as well as the flash file. This applies to both ticalc and CG. That is unless Martin has had a change in policy.

The guidelines still require all apps that are distributed to include the original programs and pics. The reason I ask for this is that I think that the app should be an extra way of distribution and not the only way to get a certain basic program. I also require the distribution to mention that it was created using basicbuilder somewhere. I require that because I think that asm and basicbuilder apps should be identifiable, since the average asm program on ticalc is of higher quality than the average basic program.

So what's new in this version of BasicBuilder?

This is off-topic, but I sucessfully wrote a script that returns the URL for your author profile page if you give it your user ID. This is the first step in creating a program to rival TiReport!! I think I'll call it 'PyReport'.

fopen() anyone?
The only drawback of BasicBuilder is that you can't hide the App unlike Basic and ASM programs. Or can you?

Here are the changes, taken straight form the manual:

• 2.0 should leave more free space to include programs and/or pictures. It has a lot of new features to make this possible:
o It leaves out support for things you don’t use like recallpic support when you don’t add any pictures.
o It recognises when two programs look very much alike and tries to save space by taking advantage of the similarity.
o And last but not least, the code was optimised to save space at several places.
• You can now use omnicalc, symbolic or other special basic functions inside your apps. But the calculator on which you run the app will still require omnicalc, symbolic or whatever app is needed to be installed.
• The menu isn’t displayed anymore when it would only have one choice beside quit.
• You can make your basic programs return to the app menu when they are finished. Thus you don’t need to go to the app menu to get back to the app.
• The decompiler now produces better output which can be recompiled into an app immediately.
• Fixed some bugs and probably added some new ones as well

The only possible benefit I can see to Basicbuilder is being able to run your BASIC programs without first unarchiving them, but you have to go through an extra menu either way (an app's root menu or the memory management menu).

acully you have two less menus to go through if you use the application (see below) and having it as an app compresses the data greatly

Menu:
Apps - GO
Memory - Memory Managment - All (un-archive) - then quite that - Prog - GO

You forgot to also include the rearchive in the keylist. Because you need the ram when you run asm programs.

And that's what makes all the difference...it's sort of annoying to have to unarchive a program every time you use it, but it's REALLY annoying to have to unarchive AND rearchive a program every time you use it.

i use groups all the time! They are so much easier than having to unarchive and rearchive. You just delete it when you are done using it. And the teachers never know you had the program, unless you named the group something obvious like "cheating" or something that only and idiot would name it.

I haven't ever used basic builder but i have used some programs that used it. It is a great idea and If i used Basic to program anymore i would probably use it a lot!

I believe the intent of his comment was to point out that programs are also stored in a compressed format. Or am I the one making the mistake of not recognizing humor? ;-)

The second was right. As for the first, he was questioning the fact that there was compression in either him saying that there was in fact none, or that he is making sure that it is right because he thinks it wouuld be cool.
