Blinded by the Dark
Posted by Michael on 29 September 2004, 14:21 GMT

[Blinded by the Dark]Today we're posting about an old program, but one that was suggested by our venerable file archiver Morgan. For the 86, Blinded by the Dark is an action RPG in which the sun has been blocked by a huge black cloud. Only the part of the screen in your "line of vision" is illuminated. Combine this with the normal features of a detailed RPG, and you have the makings of a great game.

In this case, the program was originally missed since I became news editor five days after its release. In the future we may post more of these types of articles during periods of otherwise quiet news activity. However, please don't send e-mails begging to have all of your old programs featured.

Well I don't personally have an 86, but I can take Morgan's word for it. ;) It looks k@@l!

You should really take a look at the opening title screen. The most impressive I have ever seen!

Get VTI! It can emulate any calc, and you can send programs and stuff to it.

I use it all the time to have a look at programs and and edit/optimize people's [BASIC] programs :)

Hmm, it's covered by the GPL but there's no source... Where would I obtain the source if would I want to?

Ahh, nevermind, that's what I get for not reading the readme... At least that site it sends you to is still up. :)

Still, I think I remember that a GPL program must have its source in the package it's released, so BBTD as it is now is not GPL-compliant, if I'm not mistaken.

Wrong. See section 3.

The source code is in the TI-86 Assembly Source directory. I believe the author is fully compliant with the GNU GPL; specifically the last paragraph of section 3 states:

"If distribution of executable or object code is made by offering access to copy from a designated place, then offering equivalent access to copy the source code from the same place counts as distribution of the source code, even though third parties are not compelled to copy the source along with the object code."

The source code is available from the same place (ticalc.org), and equivalent access to it is offered.

I've played this game, and it definitely was amazing (especially the gfx), except that I had problems with the fighting (couldn't seem to hit anything!).

i so wish we had some RPGs this nice for the 89. calc rogue is cool as hell, but not exactly an 'action' game.

So this is like that Manfred Mann song...

Blinded by the Dark
Revved up like a deuece
Another runner in the park

No, that's not how it goes. Hmmm, whatever.

This game looks suh-weet! It's for my fave calc, and it's even under the GPL! Score!

I give it two binary finger 00001's!

But if it is a program that I have loved for quite some time, made by someone far greater and older and more removed than I, it is okay, right?

Please see link. I know that there was a request not to make thousands of these kinds of requests, but since this program is excellent and it definitely slipped through the cracks, I decided to make this shameless plug. :)

This looks like Windows w/o color. Very good program when I ran it on VTI. I can't wait to get my TI-89 to try it out for real.

That windowing system looks interesting, but severe overkill for any but the most complex programs. Most of my games now are just using plain old TIOS 'DlgMessage()' and 'Dialog' for low overhead 'pretty' UI.

What if you need a checkbox?

What if it was used in the next release of PedroM or some other OS?

On the TI-89 I've used a drop-down menu with "Yes" and "No" options as a kind of "checkbox", though a real checkbox would be nice, as well as real radio buttons.

I think it would be nicer if it were designed to work well without a mouse-like input, kind of like the TI-9x window system. It could use up/down or another key to select the widget and left/right/other keys to change the selected widget. It probably would be faster and easier than using the arrows to move a cursor to select the widget.

It doesn't work on a V200... Or does it? I didn't check.
