Desolate Released for the 83+
Posted by Michael on 18 August 2004, 18:56 GMT

[Desolate] Previously I reported on Desolate, a highly acclaimed RPG for the 83, and commented that "a 83 Plus version is planned shortly." Well, one hundred and thirty one days later, I'm happy to announce that the 83 Plus version is safely nestled in our archives. Just like its 83 counterpart, it features flickerless grayscale, 70 rooms, 26 items, 7 puzzles, and many other goodies.

Okay, I have a problem with this game. Mainly, the map. All the rooms are the same size, none are smaller, yet when I made a map on paper, I had two rooms occupying the same space. I don't understand how this is possible, or even why it was made that way,

When you link rooms by doors, rather than by a megamap, you can allow for all sorts of crazy stuff, include blatant violations of the laws of physics. Duke nukem 3D even allowed a single sector to overlap itself multiple times, so you could go into the same space within a single room, and get different tunnels.

In this case I'm guessing it's forgetfulness on the author's part, or some psuedoscientific explanation is needed... "The rooms are actually different scales", or "There are invisible hallways" junk like that. Or how about "The aliens have destroyed the time-space continuoum! We're all gonna die!"

These rooms are on different levels, there are elevators you can't see between these rooms :)

Well ... i had to cut out some rooms as the game was too big. Originally everything fit into a nice grid, i never expected anyone to draw out a map :).

Erm, i just found a little bug in the game. Nothing serious (like it wont cause a crash or anything) just that there is a posiblity of finishing with like a massive amount of items found (possibly in the thousands :P). I suppose its not really that bad, at least u will get the good award all the time :).

I have fixed it and re-uploaded the game to the archives ... it was only present in the 83+ version btw :).

I drew out a partial map the first time (so that I could find my way around at all!), and a full to-scale map the second time (because I was interested in the layout), and I noticed the same thing. If you extend some of the rooms, it all works out :-)...

I still don't know how to reactivate the air pressure thing or whatever. *spoilers* I have the air pressure tool or whatever it's called (not the drill, the other one), and I have the duck and up to the level 4 password (obviously). But what do I do with the duck and the tool to make the big machine work, so I can open the next door? Thanks.

Find the airlock pressurization controls (through a level 4 door, I think) and use the airlock tool on it.

What do they look like? And what is the duck for?

Go through the door on the left of the room with the life support system. The duck is just an easter egg. :-)

My copy took an extremely long time to do anything.

I have a normal 83+ and set the interrupt setting to 6, and everything was lightning fast, and I don't even mind the flickery greyscale.

Try a different interrupt setting each time until you find the one that works best.

Yes, you'll need MirageOS for using this Game. Yes, you can just send mirage to your calc.

The Difference: Mirage doesn't replace the TI-OS, it's just an additional Application that is required to run most asm-games. You will still be able to use all your old programs.
Mirage is clearly a must-have if you want to run games on your calc.
