A Few Good Programs
Posted by Michael on 28 July 2004, 04:58 GMT

[Monochromatic 2]Tonight we're presenting three of the many files that were added to our archives on Saturday. First, Monochromatic 2 is an 83 ION graphics demo that does some pretty fancy things. A very tired news editor who wants to go to sleep writes short descriptions, so if you have an 83 and want to see what it's capable of, check it out. There's also an 83+ version, but it is untested.

For the 86, there's an interesting even if not too practical set of assembly routines for preemptive multithreading. These are of absolutely no use to the casual calculator gamer though. However, Seklorean Warrior Shell, also for the 86, not only has a unique name, but contains a slew of features that rival the Unix program Emacs.

Uh Oh, Michael called Emacs a "linux program." Could their be any greater disrespect? I know mv claims to be tired, but anyway, INVOKE RMS!!!!

Well, it runs on Linux, doesn't it?

Yes, but it will hardly run on Linux without glibc. :D
So, as the author of GNU Emacs (Richard M. Stallman) would say, it runs on GNU/Linux, not on "Linux".

And it also runs on plenty of systems besides Linux, by the way. So "GNU program" would be more correct than "Linux program".

OK

But really, when you say 'Linux program', everyone knows that probably means 'GNU/Linux System Program'. Then again, if everyone called it the 'GNU/Linux System' instead of 'Linux', there would probably be less confusion for newbies as to what Linux really is.

but... it isn't a linux program, so to speak. It was originally made for unix, as a macro set for temacs (I think), afaik. Of course there is a linux port (and no GNU port (excluding the non-complete GNU Hurd), as there is no GNU complete OS (yet)) which is very widely used, but that confusion is exactly the same as what RMS is fighting... And I agree that "GNU/Linux system" could let newbies understand that linux, X, the toolset, bash, glibc, etc, are all seperate and inportant parts of the system, unlike monolitic mac and windows.

ok, I think I just jumped around what you meant at the begining, but RMS wants the GNU prefix always on Linux...

Heh. You know, Emacs jokes are somewhat less funny when you're speaking to an audience that needs to be told what Emacs is (or isn't, depending on your perspective.)

And strangely, I've found that misplaced RMS jokes are even less funny.

Emacs is a text editor, right?

It wasn't meant entirely as a joke, to be honest it seems to be exactly what RMS is going against... not only is it dropping the GNU, it is attributing Emacs to Linus et. al.

You should use Vim.

I haven't used either Emacs or Vim long enough to flame them. Personally, I prefer Kate for coding asm, KDevelop for other programming languages, and either joe or nano for config files. For the calc I usually use NoteFolio, and in the absence of anything else I use a pencil. :)

Changed to Unix. Since I ran Emacs under OS X yesterday (not my computer... stupid iMac computer cluster at CMU), I would assume that Unix is an acceptable description.

Give MV a break... he was tired. :-)

Multithreading
ti_is_good_++  Account Info

Now if only the multithreading one was a TSR (I don't even know if that's possible on a TI-86).

The routines themselves look very useful to someone who could implement them properly in a shell, though.

Oh, it's very possible on the 86...it's been used in probably hundreds of games and other progs for grayscale (and occasionally other things, like enemy movement).

Were you referring to a TI-86 TSR or multithreading?

Three Featured Programs for the TI-86 in one week? This must be a record. I don't remember there being *any* last year.

Monochromatic 2 is for the 83. But yes, they are all z80 language programs.

Actually, NO. System hacker was aleady featured. Few programs make the new more than once, and then hardly more than once in 2-3 years. That is definitely meant to be Seklorean Warrior Shell :-)

No, he said "3 TI-86 programs featured in one week". The 3 86 progs are Seklorean Warrior Shell, the multitasking routines, and System Hacker. Monochromatic is for the 83.
