OurWorld Released
Posted by Michael on 4 June 2004, 03:57 GMT

[OurWorld on the 89]Kirk Meyer of Detached Solutions has released a new flash application for the 83+/89/92+/V200: OurWorld. OurWorld is a world atlas that is fully zoomable and has political boundaries defined by 30,000 data points. There are also labels of countries, capitals, major cities, and lakes. The 83+ version uses a flat projection while the 89 version and 92+/V200 version use an orthographic projection for a globe-like appearance.

It's also worth mentioning that this app won the grand prizes in the 2003 TI App Development Contest for both the Z80 and 68k divisions.

That's true...I guess it is better for us that some idiotic PR person at TI decided not to sell this app :-)...

Question for Kirk Meyer
Chivo  Account Info

Question for Kirk: What is the resolution of the data? I mean, is it like 10 miles, 50 miles, or something?

I presume the data is stored as two bytes (one for latitude and one for longitude), unless it's compressed. Given that, I'm guessing it's probably about 100 miles for latitude and about 50 miles for longitude.

Am I close?

Since the program is not to be used as a navigational aid, I do not wish to put a number on the resolution in miles.

However, I will tell you that the uncompressed latitude and longitude coordinates take 4 bytes (2 bytes each). Also note that there is a big difference between precision and accuracy for this application. Although the precision is high, borders (especially outside the United States) have been smoothed.

I could not send this to you, so I will put it here.

If you go to "Find" and search for "Malawi", and press
the down arrow, you will see some unsightly lines on
the screen. They go away if you press arrow keys. They
persist if you zoom out. The EXACT coordinates are 14
degrees 2 minutes to 14 degrees 5 minutes south, and
32 degrees 39 minutes to 34 degrees 16 minutes east.
Could you correct this bug in future 68K versions?
Thank you.

The support address given in the manual is fully functional.

I have noted the problem. There is also another minor issue with the 68K app. Since these apps must be signed by TI, I am gathering together changes until there are enough for another signing.

I have to say that this is an awesome APP. Good thing it's freeware, or else I wouldn't have it. For those who want to know, I have 640k left on my 83+ SE, due to 30 odd APPS, including DAWG and OurWorld.

Kirk-
I think I found a bug in the Search (83+ version). If you have lowercase enabled, you can't jump by pressing A-Z, which is annoying. Anyone else experiencing the same problem?

I will investigate the lowercase issue that you mention. However, since lowercase is not supposed to be allowed on the 83+, this is not really a "bug" but a compatibility problem with any software that enables it.

I might not be looking in the right place, but I can't find TI's app contest page. I think it used to be a link to winstuff from the student site. They also have removed the winner page from education.ti.com/us/student/main.html
