TI-84 Plus Now Available
Posted by Michael on 26 April 2004, 04:28 GMT

Breaking news just in: The TI-84 Plus is now available through most channels for purchasing. TI has also created a new website to promote the new 84 product line: 84silver.com.

It appears that the 84 Plus Silver Edition is not yet available (you can pre-order from several places though), only the 84 Plus for now. If you are looking for a place to buy one, check Froogle.

Someone pointed out in the HP release article that it was merely copying slashdot. Well, this time slashdot appears to have posted an article on the 84+ after ticalc.org. Im curious if Ticalc's hit count will be higher today than usual, after a slashdot article about a new ti, although there was no ticalc link on /.

As long as the news is getting out it doesn't really matter IMHO. I don;t believe that the Slashdot article is linked to ticalc.org so I wouldn't expect too much more traffic.

I won't buy it. TI must develop a better screen. The TI-81, purchased first in 1990, had/has the same screen.
It needs at least 200x135 on the same area.
I think TI must introduce a color (e.g. red, green & blue) or, like in RIGview, a greyscale screen to persuade me buying the TI-84 plus.
If they don't do that I will buy a TI-83 Plus S.E.

But aren't 83+ and 84+'s the same price? The last time I checked (a few months ago...), they were the same price and the 84+s were designed as a replacement to the 83+.

I just did a brief check on education.ti.com and I didn't find any prices. I was probably looking in the wrong place.

I think everyone id failing to realize that if the screen resolution was changed, practically none of the current ASM programs would be compatible.

well.. they could do what nintendo did when they released GBA and just put a black (or white) box around the screen not used in GBC or GB games. I thougt I saw a screen shot once on ti.com that showed an app running with a white border around it. I thougt it looked a little weird, so I just disregaurded it as a mistake of some sort.

App with a white border? That's not a compatibility issue.

As I said above, The 84 line is not neccesarily meant to be better than the 83+ but to replace a nearly 5 year old calc.

200x130, are you nuts!?!

I don't even know if expensive laptops could achieve that kind of resolution.

I don't have a ruler with me, but I think the current dpi is close to 1400. A 200 by 130 would require a dpi close to 6000. I might have seen a color lcd with a dpi of 7200 (or was this the dpi of a photograph printer), but that kind of quality would become quite costly.

personally, I think that 120 by 80 would be more likely (about 2000 dpi with current screen). Besides, you would at leas want the same aspect ratio. The current aspect ratio is 3:2, the one you chose is 20:13, so the graphics would seem a little flat.

Furthermore, memory quickly becomes an issue. Currently, the TI83 has 32k of RAM (24k is user while 8k is system). The current display uses 768 bytes. Black and white 200x130 would need 3250 bytes and 120x80 would need 1200 bytes. Adding color to the resolutions would have the following effect:

4 color (white, red, gree, blue) Multiply by 2
16 color multiply by 4
256 color multiply by 8

Both higher resolution and color would require either more RAM or less user space (and 24k isn't much to take away from). Adding a higher resolution color screen and more RAM would be expensive. I would say the price would almost double with all of the new hardware required.

With that said, I would be happy if they would just junk the old display driver and use one like in the 85 and above. The hardware would be a little more expensive, but not a whole lot more.

"Interactive analysis of function values, roots, maximums, minimums, integrals, and derivatives."
DOES THIS MEAN I CAN SYMBOLICALLY INTEGRATE?? I hope so. I need more than just fnInt! That would be awesome for my Calc BC final, cause the teacher won't let me use my 89.

the thing im most curious about is if the Ti-84+ se has the same software incompatibility issues as the ti-83+se did with the regular ti-83+ ie. mirageos didnt work correctly, and there were linking issues between the se and the regular, this is a major factor in my decision to either buying a regular or se of the ti-84 because i already have a ti-83+se and if it has the same problems, i want a regular ti-84 so i can play certain games and programs that dont work on my current calculator, if anyone knows any info on this, please post it here, it will be a great help to me, thanks

I have a TI-83+SE, and MirageOS works fine on it.

But the thing I'm somewhat annoyed about is that the TI-81, 82, 83, 83+, 83+SE, 84+, and 84+ SE, and TI hasn't made the graphics any better. It's still the same 96x64 screen.

Faceplates, USB and a clock aren't really convincing enough for me to buy an 84.

Yes, you can take the integral over an interval or the derivitive at a point using the graph screen on the 83+, but you can also use nDeriv( and fnInt( to do it.

No, they're talking about exactly what the 83+ does, which is to do all of those things numerically.

because they think that you really need to know what is happening when you have the 89 integrate because to truly understand it, you need to be able to do it.

Thats it exactly...although I doubt that there will be a time when I need to integrate and don't have access to a symbolic integration utility. I could picture some murderer coming up to someone, grabbing their shirt, pointing a gun at their head, and then demanding the integral of (e^x)(sin(x)).

your teacher shouldnt be able to selectively discriminate against calculators. Then the 89 users wouldnt have a calc at all. He should provide replacements or something.

Ummm I have a TI-89, and, hate to say it, but there is definitely a reason for the teacher to ban it. It does EVERYTHING for you. (depending on what class you are in)
My school will loan any math student above freshman geometry to borrow a TI-83p if they need one.

-TB
PS- I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS, but if you REALLY need to, remove the motherboard from an 89 and put it in a 83p's case:with a slight mod to the case it works. But DO NOT use this for standardized tests (...well just the ACT).

Write your own solver and use strings instead of expressions and it should work (with a lot of troubleshooting).
