File Rating Toplist added
Posted by Magnus on 3 April 2004, 17:08 GMT

Now that we have collected a couple of ratings on the files in our archives (about 2500 of them), we have now added a toplist based on file rating. Rating will also be listed on the file information pages.

We are using a weighted average instead of a straight one. This is done so that a file that has received a lot of good ratings will get a higher average than one that has just received a few, and then the same for files with low ratings. For this reason, it is possible for a file to get a weighted average that is slightly above 10 or below 1.

So, once again, go rate files! Just select the rating you want to give the file on the file information page-

That's funny... there are programs on the list with only 4 votes :)

This is why we need more ratings (the 2500 we have so far are spread out on over 1500 different files).

Once we have more ratings, we will probably "raise the bar" to be on the list.

Since this article was posted, I've rated 10+ files (all of which are on the toplist). On to some more...

Are we going to see the "who rated the most files" list soon? :)

There's a reason for not having a list for the most ratings: it can and possibly will influence people to rate programs just so they can be on that toplist. I think that the ticalc.org people want the ratings to be fair so they can be used to display files for download better or something like that. If people go around just arbitrarily saying, "I'm going to give this file a 3 for fun because I like that number", the ratings system will have to be abandoned because it would be useless.

I don't think people would do that. But they might... I just think the rating list would be more of an incentive to make [good] ratings. Well, for me at least.

I'm not sure everyone has all of the good intentions that you do. I wish they did, but I'm pessimistic about that...

My motivation sort of is to let all of the programs that I like get recognition and more downloads from other people. To tell you the truth, I haven't rated much until today when you could tell how good a program was. Without being able to see the average rating, rating was kind of pointless....

My one suggestion to whoever's programming the ratings-viewing thingie is show the average rating even if there aren't four ratings yet. Better (and possibly more) feedback.

Yes. It would be nice if you could see a program's rating from the program description page, and not just the ones on the toplist.

It will show them even if they are not on the toplist. The only requirement is that they have four or more votes. The reason for this is that until you have that, the average really doesn't mean anything...

Do you think there might be some way to indicate a rated file from the author/archive page?

Heh, look at #1:
10.12 (40 votes)  ZShell v4.0
The weighted average pushed it over 10 :)

Hover over the little red page icon next to your username, then look at the URL (on IE it's at the bottom of the screen - or just right-click and check the link properties). The end of it should say "userid=x" where the x is your ID number. For example, mine is 33018, and yours is 42040.

I should have figured someone older would post something like that, but I had to say it. Kids these days don't know how to respect their elders.

I normally would not have said anything but a while back I posted my author page URL on TI-News and someone pretty much said "wow, you are old!" :)
