TI-News Closes
Posted by Michael on 16 February 2004, 01:45 GMT

It is a sad day in the TI community as we have learned that TI-News (link points to the web archive) has permanently shut down. A combination of technical issues and a lack of interest prompted this closure. We wish to thank Tim Buckingham and all of the former TI-News staff for their contributions to the community.

What the hell does the current site under that name have to do with TI, or news about TI?

It doesn't. It's the "default" page that server's httpd shows instead of a virtual hosted page, like TI-News. The TI-News.com domain still points to the server, so you see that page instead of one relating to calculators.

Let us not speak in jargon. The server took them down, and put up its default site instead.

And let's not jump to conclusions without even visiting the site. The current one is NOT the server's default. See my above post.

It didn't have to "put up" anything... all they did was remove something...

...which exposed something beneath it -- the default (dlgreen) site.

I hope you don't mind me continuing your sentence.

Above where it says (Web Page) is an archived cache from the Ti-News site from May 23rd, 2002 to Feb. 12th, 2003 (with archives from an assortment of dates inbetween. It was registered as ti-news.net, but it was later changed to ti-news.com.

Above where it says (Web Page) is an archive for the Ti-news.com website, from Mar. 27th 2003 to June 23rd 2003. At least this cache gives some example of what Ti-news was like.

To bad to see it go, it used to post quality news, and alot of it. Luckily Ticalc.org has restored itself to it's former goodness and now taken over the role of tinews as news site once more.

Ditto. I never visited TI-news frequently, but it's a shame that it shut down. Even so, ticalc still has everything I need.

I HOPE NOT!!! I loved to read all the wonderful things so the news going away is bad enough.

I sincerely doubt it, even if it were to happen due to technical/financial problems, those of us fortunate enough to have our own servers (i.e. me) would be glad to give support or host or something.

Well, I suppose I'm one of the many to blame for "lack of interest". Sorry... ticalc.org already had everything I wanted!

I can say with certainty that nobody is to blame for the lack of interest. It had nothing to do with how many people visited TI-News or not. Instead, Tim is more interested in the band that he's a mmeber of (Chancing Tomorrow) and other things that don't involve calculators.

If you still want to see the old site, check out the WayBack machine (link).

WayBack-as in Rocky & Bullwinkle? And what does that have to do with an archive linked to by the article?

The "Wayback" machine. As far as I know, that is from the show "News Radio", and Jimmy James (The man so nice they named him twice) would say "Lets step in the wayback machine, to befor [insert thing one would not want to hear, or remember]." Then again, he could be talking about something different. However, I am relitivly sure that he is refering to a time machine.

I think it only goes back like... eight years or so. Correct me if I'm wrong.
