Calculator Chili?
Posted by Michael on 31 January 2004, 00:58 GMT

Hormel Foods Corporation has recalled its canned chili product because of external contamination. What was 104,000 pounds of chili contaminated with - Mad Cow Disease? No. Calculators. Sixteen states now have extra-special, super-mathematical cans of chili on their grocery shelves.

In unrelated events, a former ticalc.org staff member has reported that Nick lost his graphing calculator last week. After an unsuccessful attempt at late-night cow tipping, Nick was performing bovine mass computations. Upon leaving the pasture, he was subsequently unsure as to where had left his beloved 86.

Wow. I thought that was a joke, then I clicked on the link.

I wonder what kind of calculator it was... hopefully a low-end HP, I would hate to see a TI graphing calculator be multilated and spread among 100K+ cans of chili.

Well, it's about time that TICALC.ORG has posted a fake news item. It has not posted one for a few months.

Anyway, I have never used an HP or a CASIO(tm or R or something); what's so bad about them, aside from the fact that TI dominates the market with some of the most advanced calcs that are smarter in math than my 366 computer (although with good programming, my 366 could beat a V200 any day)?

I'm not sure what's wrong (if anything) with HPs, but Casios are unusable.

The low-end models can't find minimum, maximum, intersect or zeros. (even a TI73 or 81 can do that - it's what a graphics calculator is designed for!)

The higher-range models can do these things, and have color (really crappy).

Another problem is that the on-calc BASIC is unusable. I don't usually have a problem with 86-style menus, but the ones on a casio have some wierd ways of selecting things. You also don't have the option of "typeable tokens" which are good if you cant find what you're looking for.

BUT, the main problem is the lack of user-upgradability. they haven't even published what processor is in there, let alone opened any holes for assembled or compiled programs.

To ensure you always stay with quality calculators, "Don't call it a Casio, call it a Crappio"

I wouldn't say that the on-calc BASIC is unusable... its just a lot less powerful (as if tib was pwerful in the first place :)). The "functions" are more easily named, like RandNum instead of RandInt.

Typeable tokens aren't that great if you don't have a keyboard to type them in with (i.e. 92+/V200). It's nice, but not all that useful. 83+'s are much much more easy to use than 86's.

They are that great-for example, for a shortcut program to a shell or some very commonly used function, you can name it Z or something on the 86, and when you want to run it, you just type Z and press enter. On the 83+, you would have to select it from the program menu, which can be hard if you have a lot of progs.

I was just kidding, while supporting the stereotype ph-so-many TI users have against the other brands. I would love to have an HP49G+, and have you seen the ClassPad300? click the URL above.

We've seen it. We've looked online at its bid specs. We think it's a PDA, not a calc, and doesn't belong here. Anyway, I know an HP-49G+ owner, and he is constantly swearing at it, while it gives off little irritating beeps instead of error messages and he doesn't know what he's doing wrong. He's read the manual-such as there is one-and cannot figure the calculator out. He can barely do four-function work with it (he's never opened the text editor, used the link, graphed an equation, etc), and that's when the weather is mild enough so that the keys don't melt or freeze. That calc is an irritating waste of time. If you need a new one, get an 89Ti when they come out and put PedroM, Morvlon 3.00, and some external memory on it.

Ahh, yes. I turned the beep off.

If you want, have your friend e-mail me and I'll help him with his 49g+. I don't have all of it worked out yet, but I can at least help him get started using it. (Actually using it, not yelling at it or whatever...)

I suppose that USA Today posts "Fake News"

The link shows a USA Today article which talks about a TRUE CHILI RECAL DUE TO CALCULATOR PARTS CONTAMINATING CHILI.

I suppose you still don't believe it. (though I doubt it was a calculator which someone lost ... correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't read the whole story.)

Sorry, broken link. It's too ling to put in the URL box on this form so you all will have to copy the parts below to the "Address Bar" (where you type www.ticalc.org to get here) and delete the spaces (not dashes '-' but spaces ' ') to make it work.

If that's directed at me--FYI there are some people (yes, this is hard to believe) that don't know what the "address bar" is.

Example conversation in computer lab with one of these people:
person-- I think there's somthing wrong with my computer.
teacher-- why?
person-- the mouse won't move
teacher-- try turning it off and back on
person-- how? I can't move the mouse
teacher-- hold in the power button
person-- where is that?
teacher-- will someone help [student] re-start the computer

Exactly... that's why I would never steal a lunch (well, I wouldn't do it in the first place).

That would also be the exact type of thing that I'd do if I was being terrorized by someone who stole lunches. :-D

Now, where did I put that rat poisoning?

No kidding! Well, I buy lunch, so I'm safe. And they can't steal my money either. We use an "account" system with a pin number (like a bank, almost) for our school lunches.

As do we. But for those of us who have free lunch (not me, my friend Richard, who does not eat lunch has it, so I use his number) do not need to keep money in out account.

I remember when we had to use PINs in middle school, even if we brought money. That sucked. Then, in high school, we had to start wearing IDs, and they used the barcode for lunch. That sucked worse because if you didn't wear an ID, you went to ISSP.

Wal-Mart is an easier victim. I made a killing from hot 89's and 83+SE's 2 yrs ago, along with most of their other electronics. I no longer steal though. Watch out for Seklorea, the newest in-development 86 shell. Already support for TIMM and Viewer files (launchers unnecessary); a sound player (from strings); uncompressed, VRLE, and RLE 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 bit picture viewer (from strings); chatter; FTP module; variable editor; game level recognition/protection; file (de)compression; and pw protection....It'll be the sh*t! Sorry to hear so much chili was contaminated...I pissed in a vat of Spaghettio's at a factory tour once.
