Joey Gannon Joins the Dark Side
Posted by Michael on 13 January 2004, 22:41 GMT

We are sorry to report that Joey Gannon, our hard-working file archiver, has been seen participating in the notorious RPN cult. This is the same group that is infamous for the Sliderule Massacres of '71. Oaths of secrecy prevent information from disseminating to the public, but the mystical letters RPN are rumored to stand for Really Poor Notation, though this is unconfirmed. Members have been known to do odd things in the name of Al-Gebra, their sacred way of math.

No one knows why he may have done this. One psychologist we interviewed stated, "There are many reasons why an individual would suddenly dissociate from previous beliefs." He was not of much help. Our other file archiver, Morgan, experienced no signs of mental distress, commenting: "What did Joey do!? WHAT??? He always seemed like such a good kid!"

ticalc.org readers in Maine have written to report seeing Joey dressed in black robes and performing a calculator sacrifice. His only comment was, "Oportet ministros manus lavare antequam latrinam relinquent. When I burn the calculator, my world becomes the calculator. I must go find a Voyage 200 now so that my long journey to enlightenment may begin."

Oh man! After dropping my calculator on hard floors hundreds of times I thought that it was indestructable! I need to make a note to keep all calcs away from Joey :-)

Speaking of indestructible calculators, my math teacher told me last semester that he had attended a "math conference" hosted by TI. It was to demonstrate the capabilities of the 89, and one of the things they did was THROW IT AGAINST A WALL TO SHOW HOW DURABLE IT WAS (the insanity). It turned out that it broke...the demonstration was a failure, but they RETRIED (oh, Lord, help us all). This time however, it worked...The calculator was still operable. Well...that's my two cents for the day...

But is is pretty funny that ie broke, and they said that it would not. You should have dove and saved it, that is what I would have done.

I saw my 12th Grade Biology teacher destroy a 83+...well she tried to at least. All she ended up doing was breaking the LCD screen. It was quite hilarious.

We were making a movie and the script called that she do so. Don't worry it wasn't a functioning 83+.

What was wrong with it? That's kind of funny... TI calculators are pretty hard to break. But I wouldn't risk it by throwing it up against a wall or anything.

Actually, they're pretty much indestructable. The only way you could ever even hurt it is if you dropped in on a weak point in the side, then the LCD screen would crack.

I've dropped mine plenty of times and I haven't noticed the slightest change in performance-even that might not work...I think to really destroy one of these things you have to either burn it or throw it REALLY hard against something, or step on it REALLY hard, or drive something sharp into it with a lot of force... I won't go on-it's too painful to think about-an innocent calculator losing its life for no reason. :-(

"Step on it REALLY hard."

It probably wouldn't break if a sumo wrestler stood on it. The weight would be distributed evenly. And away from weak points. Try this: jump on your calculator. I doubt it will break.

Very true-you would probably have to get a sumo wrestler to stand on it with one foot, wearing a shoe with a sharp point, and even then, it might survive.

Yeah, I get pretty mad whenever somebody's calculator breaks in class, and 5 people invariably gasp and go, "you could've broken it!" One time, I dropped mine like 5 times in a row from desk high just to prove that it wouldn't break. Though, it would really suck if it actually did break, like that 89.

Unless you try to disassemble it.

timgisme (a friend of mine on this site) and I once tried to disassemble his sister's TI-83 (his intent was to switch the buttons around to confuse her), and when he tried to seperate the two plastic shells that make up the frame of the 83 with a screwdriver, he accidently cracked the screen! because he was applying pressure on the upper part of one of the seams, the screwdriver slipped in and broke the glass part of the screen, leaving a horizontal crack in the glass that went through most of the display area (and it left a very nasty black smudge that covered about 90% of the screen area). Fortunately, some of the 8x16 cells still operated (and, fortunately, his sister was no longer using that calculator) :)

A kid at my school messed with another kid's 83+, screwing with all the modes and making everything look funky. When the calc's owner saw it, he got frustrated trying to fix it and threw it against the wall and broke it. So his mom bought him an 83+SE.

Here's a variation of that joke I told...this one's a story:

- Weapons of Math Instruction -

At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a protractor, a T-square, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement. The man is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search for absolute value. They use secret code names like x and y and refer to themselves as unknowns, but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are 3 sides to every triangle," Ashcroft declared.

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes. I am gratified that our government has given us a sine that it is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs who are willing to dis-integrate us with calculus disregard. Murky statisticians love to inflict plane on every sphere of influence," the President said, adding: "Under the circumferences, we must differentiate their root, make our point, and draw the line."

(continued in next post)

President Bush warned, "These weapons of math instruction have the potential to decimal everything in their math on a scalene never before seen unless we become exponents of a Higher Power and begin to factor-in random facts of vertex."

Attorney General Ashcroft said, "As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertainty of: though they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks."
