FreeCell for 86 Released
Posted by Nick on 9 September 1999, 23:29 GMT

Ben Mickle has released an 86 port of (in my opinion) the greatest game to ever grace the PC: FreeCell. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, FreeCell is a card game not unlike solitaire. Directions are included in the readme, so I won't elaborate much more here. From first-hand experience, it's a rather addictive game once you get the hang of it.

YEA! Someone whos can program ASM came out with an asm game!

I was about to stop checking TI graphing calc sites. I hope there's more games that are in development.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to make a decent asm game?

Or a decent BASIC game that will rival the overall quality of most ASM games for that matter? I've been working all summer long on a game on my 89 that, once it's finally finished, will easily rival the quality of many assembly games out there. I've spent about three months on this game so far, and overall, I'd say I'm probably about 5-10% complete.
I've already blown away my friends with just one glance at this game. So, just to enforce your point all the more, it does take some time to create a quality game, no matter what the programming language.

And, if you've got a chance, check out my new web site at http://www.andyring.com/philring83. I've gone one TI-83 game up there, but nothing for my 89 yet. Don't bother even clicking on the TI-89 button or the Contact button, because the links don't work yet. I'll have them up soon enough, though. Check back every once in a while too. Before too long I will start to release some information on my big 89 project, but I will wait until the time is right....

I love this game. Too bad I don't have an 86. Are any ports being worked on?! Someone please port it to the 83! Thanks!

I sort of looked into an 83 port... but there are two reasons that make that difficult. First, the 83 can't do grayscale (I realize the grayscale could be removed, but just keep reading). Second, as you can see this game takes up the full width of the screen, and since the 83 has a smaller screen, it makes a port rather hard to do. I wish it could be ported to the 83, but I don't think it will happen.

I've been waiting for this to be made into an 86 program for a while now. I would have done it myself, but I don't know much ASM yet.

By the way, I don't have an 83 so I don't know, but I thought the 83 could do grayscale.

1)Greyscale is possible on the 82/83. See an 82 game called Worm, or check out this website:
www.student.unimelb.edu.au/~jeremyrw

2)Since the graphics for the most part are taken from Solytare 86, you could just take the graphics from Solytare 82/83, and reduce the screen size issue.

I'm not saying it would be easy, but it also wouldn't be too too difficult.

Except Solytare has 7 collumns of cards... FreeCell has 8. You would have to elimate the space between the cards and make the cards narrower. This would look rather ugly and require quite a few adjustments to the code.

How about porting it to DoorsOS on the TI-89? I would love to see this game on the TI-89. Thanks.

I Know it would be a bunch of work but this game is so cool it needs to be ported to others like the TI-83+ thanks

It seems ticalc is pretty inconsitent (sp?) about what qualifies as "newsworthy." For instance, somehow a card game for the 86 (only 1 calculator) qualifies as newsworthy, but the release of an ANSI C compiler for **3 different calcs** isn't newsworthy? What is the reasoning behind the way news is posted here?

Please try to be a little more objective about news. Just because a game came out that you think is cool doesn't neccessarily quailify as worthy of a "front-page" article. If something is to be newsworthy, it should be applicable to a large portion of your audience -- not just to the author of the article.

This game is so addictive, this may be the last prog ever developed by anyone who has an 86. I think that's newsworthy.

I'm not mad that this got posted. I enjoy getting frequent updates, even if it isn't always a HUGE story. I'm just upset that ticalc often ignores newsworthy stories, in favor of less interesting and less important news items.

life is tough...if you want news look in a news paper...if you want asm programs and games look on this site, if you don't disagree with what ticalc.org does...then why don't you make your own site? or join ticalc as a news guy...then you'll see how hard it is to keep up wiht the news people want

I never meant to insult or offend anyone. I'm sorry if I did.

Please re-read my post. I said I am *not* mad that this post was made. I'm just upset that other, more significant news items have been ignored in the past. A little constructive criticism never hurt anyone.

For the record, I really appreciate the service that ticalc offers. I know it's hard work, and I am grateful for the time and effort put into this site by its staff.

No offense taken. None at all. Nowadays we let the file archivers put in quick articles if they find a program they like, and so it'll be a bit subjective. Especially since none of them are programmers. :)

And please send me a message if you find something newsworthy! The address is news@ticalc.org and if I don't get to it quick enough, another newsie will grab it. We don't post /everything/ we get, but we do post the good stuff!

And thank you for your comments. I do try and weigh the reactions of users when I decide which kinds of things are newsworthy and which are not.

It's simple. If I like a program, I'll post it. If you like a program, send me or news@ticalc.org an email and should it be a good program (not John Doe's TI-80 Guessing Game) we'll most likely post it. And you'll get an animated screenshot too :)

I agree. i like to frequent calculator news even if it isn't so important. i think they should just post everything even if it's not so big. if you don't like the news item, just don't read it.

p.s. is there any way to change my name from James abba shalaka Rubingh?

Hey, send us email when you hear about something cool we haven't posted on! Sometimes we know about something and don't think it's worth posting, but other times we just haven't heard about it.

As far as the relevance of news, we think most of our visitors enjoy program highlights even when they don't apply to their own calculators. Just as most of us like hearing about the latest computer gadgets, even if we don't have the hardware to actually support them. There's always the possibility of ports or running programs on an emulator, so non-TI-86 owners can often appreciate new TI-86 programs regardless.

Also, the address for news submissions is news@ticalc.org. Thanks,

Chris

Might I add that if you think something is newsworthy, email us. It doesn't need to be YOUR submission, just something you like. In fact, we appreciate recommendations more than John Doe extolling his TI-80 guessing game to us ;)
