TI Offers Translucent Cases on Newer Models
Posted by Nick on 24 August 1999, 02:19 GMT

When I thought life couldn't get any better, TI came along and topped it. Now they offer a new line of translucent iMac-style cases for the TI-73, 83, 83+, 86 and 89 calculator models. Only $4 for one or $16 for all six, plus shipping of course.

i really dont see why people are so negative about these things.. at 4$, thats cheap if you want your calc to look "nice" (depending on what your idea of nice is). All these comparisons to consumerism and evil TI and the i-mac are just lame. Get over it people.. id buy one if i still used my calc frequently, just cause its nifty, not expensive, and is a nice change of pace. I love, absolutely love, reading little teenies' "philosophical" discussions regarding something as trivial as this. Its great.

It is pretty entertaining to watch people discuss opinions! I think I even got a good laugh out of one.

It's even funnier to see people discuss opinions of opinions. But what if we start to discuss meat-opinions. Then meta-meta-opinions. What next? opinions^2? (where's pretty print when you need it)

Oh well, sorry for that diversion...but I just read a couple of books by Douglas Hofstadter (I think I got the last name right) My two favorites were "Metamagical Themas" and "Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies" (modeling the fundamental nature of human thought) Well, I think some of you here would like them

Sorry for the off topic post, but Matthew started it.

Don't I look like an idiot. that was supposed to be meta- there, not meat. oh well.

Is there a way to change the name that comes up for me? I can't stand people other than my parents calling my "Matthew".

You can't do that. Write to accounts@ticalc.org and ask them to change it for you. :)

Yep. You need to email us questions, not ask in the public areas. But now maybe some other people who were wondering the same thing have an answer. :)

Wouldn't want any fun out of life, would we? Whats wrong with a little color, if it'll get you through math class. Besides what does it matter if people want to make their calc look "different".

Nope, electronics have been green, silver, and yellow, with a myriad of colors for components for a long time. Look at a circuit card.

WOW! This is the first time I've seen something on www.ti.com/calc before I saw it here! Oh well...

I think the covers look somewhat tacky. I mean...well, they seem like they'll clash (that sounded gay) Maybe if the made the *whole* case the /< r a z y /< o l o r, then it would work.

The only good use for them that I've heard was to use it to be able to identify your calc. I remember before I got my name on mine I'd have to check the batteries to know who's calc was whos. Not worth $4 though, especially now that I have my name on mine.

because I didn't think of a good beginning for it.

Ok I am a little confused. Is it just the slide front protector or is it the whole caseing? Honestly I would like my whole calc to be translucent. If anybody knows any info would be helpful. Thanx.

It's only the front slide protector. I don't think TI would want you to void your warranty by unscrewing the back of your calculator and putting the translucent backing on it instead.

Not to mention all the trouble of putting it back together... Has anyone ever tried that? All the !@#$ing keys fall out... Try getting them all put back in correctly the first time. I accidentally switched the Math and x^-1 keys and now it drives me crazy...

Oh yes, I remember disassembling my TI-85 and seeing all the keys fall out. I decided to play along and put the keys wherever so that anyone who tried to use it would be confused as hell. Of course I got myself confused as well :) And then I ended up losing an internal screw when putting the calculator back together.

I used to take both my 82 and 92 apart all the time and never had a problem except for the f keys on the 92. Oh well maybe it will be an idea for ti sometime later.

Has anyone ever wondered why TI hasn't made their keys on sheets? If you need an example, open an el-cheapo calc (the ones that are only $5 at a grocery store) and you'll notice that all of the keys are attached to each other by thin plastic connections, which are, in fact, just one entire sheet.

The older designs of the scientific calculators had keys which were on a sheet. I don't know why TI scrapped that idea.

The old calculators have rubber keys. With hard plastic, if you pressed one key down, all the other keys around it would go down also.
