Mario 86 Released
Posted by Phil on 17 July 1999, 01:03 GMT

Ben Mickle has released Super Mario 86 v0.65 Beta for the TI-86. The game is based on the ever-popular Super Mario for NES. Even though this is only a beta version, one of the most important features about this game is that it is the first released greyscale scroller for a Z80 calculator. However, it still does not allow Mario to go past the left edge of the screen. But being only a beta, this game shows quite a bit of promise!

Excellent work!
David

Even in beta form, this program exceeds the level of playabiliy and likeness to the origional that was set by Bill Nagels version. It's very fast for a greyscale game of it's complexity, and didn't have any real bugs that I could notice.

To other not-so-enthusiastic posters:

Who CARES how many times it's been done? If this implementation is better than any pre-existing ones (and it IS), than this is what I'm going to play.
If Ben wants to spend his time making a free game that I, a TI-86 owner, can play, than I'm not about to critisize the engine he may have used, or the origionality of the game, or any other meaningless point. I don't care if he stole the ideas, engine, and code from others, and only added sprites. My point is that you all should be grateful, not disrespectful of all the time this guy has spent programming this game.

What is your guys problems?

What the heck is your guys' probelms? This Ben guy makes a game for you guys to play with and you yell at him for bad graphics? Its a TI Calculator! It cant have GOOD graphics! Plus - do you know how hard it is to program in Z80 asm? ITS HARD! Give a little respect - and if you want something different than what Ben is making - MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN GAME - You dont have to play his! Sorry, I just get mad when people are given something and complain about it. I understand telling him bugs and what could be better but saying that the "graphics sux" is just retarded. Beggers cant be choosers.

All I gotta say is that screenshot makes me wish my TI-86 didn't have a cracked LCD. I've never seen a mario port look so close to the original. Good work from what I can tell.

In v0.76, you can change the contrast as you play by pressing [+]/[-].

Avigo programming
Avigotto

I was wondering if anyone here programs for the avigo. I know that this is TICALC, but the avigo is done by TI and uses a Z80, which I assume means the programming formats are quite similar. Alot of you are talented programmers, and if you could learn how to program for the avigo, you could revitalize the dying Avigo community. Oh, and if you want to buy one of these, you can get some of the leftover spanish ones from TI. Just toss out the manual, use the PDF files, and have fun. Its about a hundred bucks. The reason I bring this up, is that the avigo is the perfect device for SMB.
