Program Ideas Survey Results
Posted by Nathan on 22 March 1999, 00:15 GMT

A week ago, we closed our Program Ideas section. We received several complaints, so we hosted a survey on the section's future. Only 63 of you voted; the majority favored bringing the Program Ideas back in an automated format. We will put this on our to-do list. If you have any suggestions for improvements to the section, please post them in response to this article.

Why not?

(Web Page)

Why not have to automation remove program ideas that are on the server for over a certian period of time? Or make it so the server will only post suggestions that have more than one vote. For example, if only one person comes up with the idea for a new style of graphic organizer, the server will keep it on file and not post it until another person submits a similar idea. A moderator could be assigned to check on the ideas and override some of the really good ideas and have them be posted regardless. The moderator could also remove any vulgar ideas or refrences from the databases as well.

True, it does sound like a rather stupid idea (the second part that is,) but I'm sure the good folks at TiCalc.Org will work this one out.

Uh huh...

I think this should go under the dumb idea section someone mentioned earlier. :)

Please, people... Keep on topic, and act a bit more polite.

Really, people...

If you have the urge to be immature and call people and their ideas stupid, at least have the curtasy of not doing so in a public forum. If all you can think of posting is "Your idea is stupid," without giving reason or without offering a better sugestion, then don't post anything at all.

I, frankly, am stunned that the TI-Calculator owners have degraded to childish name-calling.

No offense intended toward the current forum admin, but, had I the job, I would prevent or delete posts that have nothing to do with the topic, but simply make fun of another person or a person's idea.

Get with it, people. I know that none of you are in the 4th grade, but you sure do act like it sometimes. I know you have the ability to act more mature than your age tells you to act. Let's try to be adults here, okay?

hear hear. humour is one thing, degrading comments are another.

actually, the admin does do his job. there was a vulgar and completely irresponsible post a couple of days ago and it was deleted fairly promptly. it's really quite saddening that people would stoop to such levels.

please people, think about what you're posting! thank you.

KAKE, I think it's a good idea that you voluenteered, .org stands for "organization", different people doing different tasks, voluentarily of course. Hey, people who run this website, keep the section, just get more help with it.

I think to keep it
Sir Kender

I often feel the need for new program ideas....and any program is possible in assembly language....even Final Fantasy games. Many didn't think Zelda was possible...and there is so many versions being made. And the is games like Joltima, and Quest, etc. I do think though that the people who suggest new ideas need to explain more about it, not just say "Program Mario 64"... but say exactly what you thing would be cool in the game. Many programs made is by others ideas.

Sorry
wolf

I'm sorry if I offended anyone here by my comment about the "Dumb Ideas Section", but seriously, people, there has to be a limit.

Phil, I'm sure that there are people out there who put inapropriate messages here, but if every message that had swears in it would be thrown out, no one would want to put any up, since it would be so uptight with the rules. Lighten up.

Wolf.

I have yet to see a comment that needed any type of insult or vulgarity. However, many comments with bad words in them also express an honest point of view or make a good point (often seperate from the bad words).

I think it is wrong to delete these, but it's a very fine line and I try and err on the side of caution. Pointless comments with swearing get deleted, and worse flames get the same.

language
KAKE
(Web Page)

language doesn't bother me when used appropriately. for example, in a movie "darn!" has no bite. it just doesn't work. same thing when something completely unnaceptable happens. or say you really screw up. "oh shit" (pardon) not only makes you feel better but it gives the situation more gravity.

however, pointless posts with blatent swearing are rediculous. i've seen (on other lists) some positively ludicrous comments that were pointless and R rated and caused flame wars. the "f" word is NEVER needed.

so i guess i have two things to say.

1. keep the relevant posts language or no (within reason)

2. it's not "bad words" it's language.

Brickwall

I think that the Program Ideas section should remain open. It is a great way to get ideas for great programs to be made.

Aleks

Hey, the program ideas section sounds great, and developers having difficulty coming up with ideas could easily get inspiration there. Also, the 'dumb ideas' section sounds good, those people could then realize just how ludicrous requests for exact copies of MGS or Goldeneye for the calculator are, and they could learn from their mistake.
Also, developers should not just look to the gameboy or nes/snes for game ideas and ports. Many games designed for older computer systems could be done (look at SQRXZ), and scaled down versions of newer games (with an engine that would not necessarily be comparable to the engine utilized by that game, but could be something that the Ti could easily handle.)

Bob (no relation to BillyBob VI, V, VI, whatever)

Well, I liked the Program Ideas section, but the lack of organization was almost unbearable. What was the most annoying, though, were suggestions for games/programs that have already been made, sometimes several times(i.e. Mario for the 86 - there's Mario 86 and also Mario 85 by two different people). There should also be a limit as to how long the posts stay up, since they can become outdated very quickly. Well, that's all I have to say right now...
