Legend of Zelda Demo v0.52.6 released
Posted on 27 January 1999, 05:46 GMT

[Legend of Zelda Demo Screenshot]

Sam Heald has released the Legend of Zelda Demo v0.52.6 for the TI-82 (Ash), TI-83 (AShell83), and TI-86. This new version adds a shield, an octorak enemy, increased hit points for the bosses, four directional sprites for enemies, a larger overworld, and fixes numerous bugs. The level development is now being headed up by Derrick Ward. A final release should be available in mid-April.

It's a fun game. By no means as good as the original. But fun none the less.

As for the 86 version...

Not a bad demo, considering it was designed for the 82/83. Character animation seems a little "jumpy", Link seems to bounce up and down as he walks. Not animating every frame and using more than two frames of animation would improve that alot.

16x16 sprites seem a little big for such a small screen, making the game feel "cramped". The screen to screen scrolling might look better if it was slowed down, so the scrolling would be visible (probably visible on the 82/83, the 86 is probably much faster).

The effect of opening a treasure chest is very weird: the chest disapears, the object apears then disapears, then the empty chest apears.

Also, collision detection with link and game objects is a little strict compared to a Game Boy or NES game (requiring the player to be exactly in the center of a chest or a door). It might help if it were relaxed a little, possibly checking two pixels into the sprite.

These comments are coming from a player's point of view (one who has played Zelda DX heavily for the past few days on GBC emu). I am making these comments not to criticize the game, but to offer suggestions, knowing that the game is far from finished.

From a programmers view, I realize that this game was designed for the limited 82/83, and I know how many hours must have been put into this demo. I also realize that the engine was created many months ago another programmer, so the original design was not made by the current programmers. I think that, when finished, this game will be a fun version of Zelda to play.

Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I've been playing ZeldaDX a bit (I beat it in one day). And if you look at the way it detects the movements it's wierd. You can walk b/t two tiles with about 3 pixels of play on each side, and if your 4-5 pizels off it will 'push' you into the porper position, kinda wierd.

Also, are you going to add text for the sign(s)?

Keep the great game goin'!

Eventually, the backgrounds will be fairly interactable:
1)Bomb-able walls/floors
2)Cracked floors
3)Destroyable plants
4)Readable signs
5)Pushable blocks

and other stuff.

I have 3 questions about the final version of the game...
1)Will you be able to pick up and throw stuff? (rocks, pots, etc.)
2)Will you have chickens in there, too? :o)
3)Will you release an 86 version, as you have done with the betas? (Please please please pretty please?)

There's an 86 version for ASE already out (in case you haven't found that out by the time of this post :)
It's in the TI-82 ZIP, I think. Or has it been moved?

As for questions 1 and 2...According to Sam, the environment will become more interactive as time goes by...Breakable objects seem within the realm of possiblity, but chickens (I mean Cuccos)...?

the gameboy version of zelda allows link to squeeze between walls, even though he is off by 2 pixels, thus so does this game, since it is a clone of the gameboy
good work sam

I don't know if the author of these Zelda's will be doing ti-85 port, but Macross software has been developing Zelda85 for a long time and there has been beta versions sent to a small group of people. Public beta will eventually arrive soon...

Just a couple o'' things...
The Notorious Computerman

Relax, okay? If the author wants a TI-85 version, there will be a TI-85 version. Be assured, though, that there will eventually be a Zelda to play. Macross Software is making one in grayscale, with a lot more stuff than this game has (not to put down this game, of course).
Also, just so you know, I'm not one of those better- than- thou owners who believes that only HIS calc is important. In fact, my only calculator is a TI-85. I had an HP48g, as well, but some idiot in a maroon car ran over it... that's a long story.

Scuba bunnie

yeah, where is the 85 version?¿?¿ And also I think that someone should make a shell for the Casio Color calculator. That would make this game really rock if it was in color!!!My 82 keeps crashing after I messed with the memory so I really havent had that much time to test it out cause I have been trying to fix the problem. I was really close to making a shell for the Casio until I got me 82, so Someone should take the responsibility of making a shell for it... I also want to know how much Memory this game will take when it is finished? My calculator is running out of that cherished memory...Also you may E-mail me to get my Testwiz5 program for the 82, I cant figure out how to submit it to the Ticalc.org archives. oh well, I think it is a really good game!!!

The sprites are a bit too large, the Nintendo GameBoy version was more smooth and had smaller sprites.. I think that there are a lot that could be done for the finished version, but this is going well.

"the Nintendo GameBoy version was more smooth and had smaller sprites" ti83 is a calculator not a GB don't forget that !

Re: Re: Re: Legend of Zelda Demo v0.52.6 released

Gameboy version didn't have smaller sprites but better resolution in screen. Sprites were also 16x16 but resolution was twice as big as on calc. Therefore the sprites seem smaller on GB version.

89 (no, not port request)
KAKE
(Web Page)

the resolution of the 89 about right for 16x16 sprites, but yes, 82 and 83 screens are too small. even on the 86 it kinda overpowers you.

this is totally off topic (not even about calcs!) but check out the website ^.

hehe, we have Zelda ayteee-niiiiine and yoooooooou dooooooon't. J/K this game looks ok, but Zelda 89 rules any TI grphics-based game. You say, "but it''s not finished?" Welp, still got SMQ which rocks too!!! Geez, CAS, high resolution, huge memory for the sweetest games...I'd marry my 89 if it could cook!

think before you submit a post. not everyone has a $30 an hour job like us high-school computer consultants. also, not everyone can get used to their complexity. (people have trouble on the 86!)

just watch it, kow_man.

Re: think

The ti-89 has the simplest and most user-friendly interface of any calculator i've ever used. i mean, waht calc has all that you need in a toolbar atop the screen that you can customize, a fast, not to mestion reliable, Motorola 68k processor, and nicely contoured buttons. I love my 89. I used to have an 86, which was a step in the right direction, with pop-up toolbars along the bottom of the screen and built in assembly, for only 15 bucks more than the eternally crappy and crashable 85 (god i loathe that thing).

And as for the 89's cost, save a measly 60 bucks and ask for the other hundred for christmas.

Dude! SHUT UP!!

Everybody out there is getting rather SICK of people like you coming in here (and elsewhere) and bragging about how good the 89 is! In cas you didn't know, it costs A HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS!

For most people, that's a little steep. And just because a new calculator comes out, why go out and buy it? What if you have an 83, and you have the Zelda demo, and other games that you think are the greatest. Why get an 89??

Some people with 89s are still normal, too. Like me. I bought an 89 about a week ago, and I love it. But I'm still using my 83 just as much to develop games. I think it's great that I can develop games for the 83 still, because it's easier and they can still be just as fun.

Hey the only reason 9 out of 10 people at my school have a graphing calc is because they loan us 82's & 83's. Not everyone can (or wants to) go out and drop $160 on a calculator.
