Yet Another Shell (YAS) v0.79 released
Posted on 21 January 1999, 00:51 GMT

[Yet Another Shell (YAS) Screenshot]

Aaron Curtis has released Yet Another Shell (YAS) v0.79 for the TI-86. This shell supports better emulation than both ASE and Rascall. The primary feature of this shell is the ability to run programs that are larger than 12KB. The limit for this shell is about the same as that for the TI-85, which makes it a very realistic emulation. This shell also supports folders, program renaming, moving, deleting, etc., as well as icons. TI-82 emulation is already under development and TI-83 emulation may be on the way as well. Additionally, Kirk Meyer plans to use different methods of TI-85 emulation to give Anaconda a size limit similar to that of YAS (about 32KB).

Additionally, Anaconda uses a code tracer (graciously given to me by SCaBBy) which allows it to fix programs which "rst 10h". In plain language this means that all programs you download will work on Anaconda, whereas with YAS some of the programs had to be patched.

what's wrong with using rst 10h? that's a good function on the ti-86 (1 byte finsym, plus much quicker).

are you referring instead to the rst 10h function of the ti-85 or ti-82? it's not quite clear...

He's talking about rst 10h on the 85, which doesn't do exactly the same thing as on the 86. The method I used of fixing it really isn't that clever but it does work.

I cannot wait to download this awesome shell! The ability to play 82 and 85 AND 83 games! Yes! Now we do not need 2 shells ( ASE and Rascall ) on the calc at the same time. Thanx a lot guys, great work.

82 emulation is COMING, and 83 emulation is being THINKED ABOUT, its not implemented into either shell yet :)

AShell v1.0 will support and emulate ti-85 & 82 games (Unlike v1.3 - which for being the "Great shell" Bill says it is, can't even emulate Asteroids.85s at all. Version 1.0 emulates it flawlessly. Maybe it's my calc's cpu version(1.2). I don't know. But I just know that if you want a great shell that will emulate pretty much all the ti-85 strings, (And dosent waste memmory beter spent on games, for the function of deleting games(which the Ti will do already, duh)) then AShell v1.0 is the shell for you.

As it is, everyone I know who has a 86, and uses shells (a total of 23 people, all prefer 1.0)

I hope this shell will change my negitive view of (those type of) shells. ARGGGGG I rely despise AShell v1.3!!!! Crashes every time!!

how do i send ti82 games onto my ti86? the ti-graph link program won't let me send it for some strange reason....it says something about wrong program type. i'm using a ti-graphlink to send programs.

I already said in my previous comment, TI-82 emulation is NOT IMPLEMENTED at this time! When it is, a converter program will be included!

sorry, i should have been more clear...this was just a general question. it had nothing to do with the program.

you are a freak, you specifically state in your last message that you tried to send an 82 game to your 86, and that it gave you a specific error, dont try not to look stupid now sonny :)

You can't send TI-82 files using Graphlink 86.

you can use 82 programs on the 86...ASE comes with a converter.

Name

Get TI's link software for the 82, export the program as an ASCII file, and then inport it on the link software for the 86. Note that I only have an 83 and an 89, but this should work. You WILL have to rewrite part of the program so that it will work on the other calculator. This will ONLY work with basic programs.

Silly man, if you are using a TI-86 Graphlink from Texas Instruments you must change the "82" or "85" in the file extension to 86 then use the same laetter that was in the original file name. If you are using calc explorer it isn't fooled and won't let you send 82 or 85 variables to your calc.

Re: Re: Re: Yet Another Shell (YAS) v0.79 released

ASE has emulation. YOU CANNOT SEND 82 FILES AS IS TO THE 86. In order to use 82 ASM (and asm only) on the 86 you must use the converter that is in the ASE zip file. You can then run the programs on ASE and send them with Graphlink86. To send 85 programs / strings / etc type in *.85? when it asks you for a filename, it will then show you all 85 files and let you trans them. Also just type in *.8* to see all 8x files.

This is awesome. Now I can play Daedalus. Getting around that size limit thing is incredibly groovy. If 82 and 83 emulation is implemented, ASE may be permanently replaced on my calc.

Very nice shell, but better than Rascall? I dont think so... Rascall hasn't ever crashed for me but YAS already has. And IHMO, Rascall has better features. I don't understand why you state it as a fact that it has better emulation than Rascall (ASE I can believe...). Good job though

Re: Re: Yet Another Shell (YAS) v0.79 released

That's because the methods YAS uses for emulation are... well... very crashable :) It relocates some things that shouldn't be messed with...

YAS will probably come close to Rascall in features but I think the author is more closely concentrating on emulation now...

Exactly... so why does ticalc.org say in their news item that the emulation is better than Rascall? I think "uncrashable" makes it better

Actually, in my opinion, i prefer yas to rascall mainly because more games (85) run on it. for example, xc-1701 2 and little dude 2 run on yas, while on rascall, they crash. (i tried it on rascall). also, in yas, when i play one of those 85 games (xc-1701 also, the first one), the down left isn't there. i havn't tried it with 86 games as yet...

my own 2 cents...

Would you mind telling me under what circumstances it crashed? I may be able to fix it.
