ticalc.org Program of the Week

Tetris by Joe Author
Week of 6 Sept. 1998

The ticalc.org Program of the Week award has been created! This award will be given out in each issue of our newsletter to the author of the most outstanding, original program released during the past week. The author will have the opportunity to proudly display the award on his or her web site. To the right is a sample.

Will this award be given to one program per calc, or to only one program each month ?

I know many kinds of Tetris, what is exactly this one (and for which calc it has been designed ?) ?

Will the award be only given to a recent prog of the week ? (since many progs has been made before this award, I think it should work for any prog !!)

I was just wondering :=)

Um, that tetris thing was just an example. There is no program of the week yet.

It will be given out to one program per week. And it will be those programs released during the past week.

Also, Tetris was just an example. The first one will be awarded in the Sept. 13th newsletter.

I don't recieve the newsletter, so will the award will be written on the news each week, so that everybody could see it, or must I subscribe the newsletter, to know who earned the award ?

Sure, we'll consider posting a news item announcing the PotW each week in addition to announcing it in the newsletter.

Who votes on this award? just you bryan? Perhaps you should add a survey script for this feature. It could automatically list everything new for the past week, to vote on.

The ticalc.org staff, but mostly it will be myself.

The problem with a voting system/survey, is that the programs released in the beginning of the week will be on the survey the longest and thus have a much greater advantage than the programs released a day before the award is out.

I have a better idea then a voting system, why dont u just add a script to count all the downloads of a file, and the one with the most downloads get the award!!

simple!

Re: Re: Program of the Week Award
Sam

That's a bad idea because the award is given to the best original game released in the past week. A simple hit count wouldn't factor in time of update or whether or not the game is original.

I don't think basing it on the most hits is a good idea, because just because a program is a popular download doesn't necesarily mean it is the best quality.

how can the award be justified if mostly you (bryan) decides who gets it? you're probably biased in some ways or another. perhaps puzzle games tickle your pickle more than card games. so you'd be more inclined to vote for a puzzle game.
i'm not saying that you would, but it could be a possibility.

wow, what a good post. very well thought out, and i didn't even think before i wrote! =)

I don't think I am that biased. :) Maybe we will create a program of the month or year award that will be selected from the weekly winners, and the users will vote on which one is the best.

You are biased. I am biased. Anyone in this Ti community who says they arent is a liar. So *maybe* the voting could just be on one day... For say, Sunday. And a simple script could tally up the 50 or so votes, and render a decision

Read Flinn's comment below about voting...

Re: Program of the Week Award
Flinn

I think the best way of doing this would be to
have a panel of 3-5 people decide each week.
However, since I don't know 3-5 people that have all of the ti calcs (and no life), we'll have to go with the next best plan and let Bryan pick. We can't let people vote because no one else owns each calculator and the results would definitely be swayed by how many people own a certain calc.

That panel of 3-5 people is the ticalc.org staff. :) I agree that voting is not a very good idea here.

Two questions: Will there be separate categories for games and for everything else? Because the majority of programs are (sadly) games, and the non-games would get slighted.
Final question: Will Ticalc.org do this retroactively? I feel stupid now, cause I uploaded PRIME4 before this was announced. :-( Hrm. Time for PRIME5 and PRIME6.
:-D

1. No, there will not be seperate categories. The non-games will not be slighted.

2. No, the first award will include programs submitted from Sept. 6 to Sept. 12.

Re: Program of the Week Award
Bob the Cat

I think there should be an arward per calc cause
the 85, 86, 92 and 89 have an advantage against the 82 and 83 that is the size of their screen...
A program may be awarded for it's originality but
also for it's graphics and then, the 82 and 83 are
a bit disadvantaged.

Re: Re: Program of the Week Award

That is a lot of awards to give out every week. I will take the disadvantages of the 82,83 into account.

Why not do a different calc each week? (and have it for programs submitted from that week back to the previous week of that calc)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Program of the Week Award

IMHO, that would be confusing and misleading to a lot of people.
