TI-89 Starts Shipping
Posted on 19 August 1998, 17:35 GMT

Texas Instruments began shipping TI-89 units to dealers late last week, and they are expected to hit the shelves sometime next week. They will be available in the U.S. with distribution limited to one major retail outlet. Wider distribution will follow a month later. The TI-89 will also be available in France this month, but we have no information about other countries just yet.

Actually it won't include Jenga(unless you want an incomplete version--teaser thing). It will however include some new chemistry programs, games, and utilities!

That's just like TI, not giving out all the information. I too would like to know which college bookstores will be selling. I guess I'll just have to go next week and find out if my college has it now...

From the FAQ on TI's web site (www.ti.com/calc/docs/faq/89faq010.htm), it says that the 89 will appear in stores as early as next week, but only in certain retail establishments. From the above web page, it will be available at Staples, and college bookstores. It will appear in other stores in approximately a month.

I also live in Georgia, but Staples is a bit cheaper than WalMart. I think my 86 was about 10 bucks cheaper, and I don't think WalMart can give you 110% on Staples, unless they have an ad of some sort... They can, of course, ship it too... But TI themselves charge about +$30 more for it, so Staples or WalMart are better than TI!

For all of you that are too far away from a staples I think theyt have a mail order department . I found I would need to drive 50 miles to a smaller city to get one.

ticalc has no discussion board... they have MAILING LISTS... this isn't a discussion board, its "comments" about the news, which in my honest opinion was a very good idea.

I can't wait to get the ti-89 as well... I guess I'll wait til someone local gets it... IE Best Buy

I havent researched at all about the 89, but i was just wondering, does it have ASM support built in like the 86 (accept it would be a 68k)??? or is someone going to have to hack it and make a shell?

It will have built-in ASM support like the TI-86 and TI-83.

Assembly will not be z80. It will be like the 92 or 92+ instead.

Ti-89 is also allowed on the SAT's and such. As where the Ti-92, is not.

The TI-92+ is a waste of money. The only major plus over the 89 it has is the qwerty keyboard and it costs twice as much.

Perhaps its not quite fair to arbitrarily claim the TI92 is 'a waste of money', as I've seen several times from several people. I would much rather type variable names & functions on the qwerty keboard, cheezy as it is. And the 92 display is bigger. I always wish I had more display real estate in my programs, so the 92 was a simple choice for me. Whether or not it can be used on SAT tests was irrelevant to me about twenty years ago. It is certainly not very portable, but I didn't buy it to cart around - I've got an HP48 for that!
