Attention span: 7/10 A little slow, only 9 levels, but 3 difficulties Controls: 8/10 A little slow Implementation: 9/10 Superb graphics, decent extras Overall: 8/10 Good shooter
Yet another classic arcade game has made it's way to the TI-82. What can I say, it's very arcade-like. It opens with a cool intro of a title picture that scrolls up the screen, one line at a time.
The gameplay is classic Space Invaders. You move your ship ducking in and out of the barriers and blasting the aliens. The barriers protect you from enemy fire, but they can also be shot through if shot at enough. The shooting seems a little slow because only one bullet may be on the screen at a time, but that was the way it was in the original. There are 4 different enemies to shoot at, but every 3 levels you get to fight a boss, a huge graphical alien.
Highscore and initials are kept. There are 3 levels of difficulty. And in the event of a teacher, a rapid shutdown key.
This game is not without it's faults, though. As I stated earlier, the gameplay is a little slow. Fighting bosses is extremely tedious on higher difficulty settings requiring 50+ hits to kill the last boss. Another complaint is that even on the hardest setting, the game wasn't that hard. Enemies simply fired quicker, and bosses took more damage.
All in all, a classic arcade shooter has been well-adapted to the 82. The graphics are superb. The gameplay is slightly strategic. The size is a little big (over 5K). I prefer one of the other games of this genre over this one. |
