Suitability: 9/10 It runs ASM/ASH programs and CrASH programs without problems Ease-Of-Use: 9/10 Simple text based interface Overall: 9/10 Great shell
CrASH, written by Hideaki Omuro and Jeff Mears, is the most recent 82 shell. However, development on this shell has stopped. However, this is currently the best 82 shell. CrASH is now compatible with all ASH v3.0 games and programs. In fact, at first glance, CrASH would appear to be identical to ASH. The interface is exactly the same.
But CrASH has many features ASH lacks. First, gone is the 14K size limit allowing great games like FFX4, Little Dude 2, and Dying Eyes to be played. Also gone is the need to leave a little room on your calculator. You can fill it up until there are less than 40 bytes left! There are a couple nice programming features like a built-in random number routine, a fast GRAPH_MEM displaying routine, and an EXIT_2_TIOS routine which allows a game to jump directly to the OS(see Ztetris for an example).
The only thing I would have liked to see in CrASH(besides more built-in programming functions) would be a scrolling game list. Currently, if you have 8+ games on your calc, the games are put on "pages". A scrolling list would be better. CrASH may not be the most original shell, but it is the best one on the 82 for now. |
