Attention span: 4/10 Limited gameplay Controls: 6/10 Axes are uncontrollable Implementation: 5/10 Some bugs Overall: 6/10 Unique concept
Rogue Runner is a rather unique game by Harper Maddox. The object of the game is to maneuver your little circle around an invisible randomly generated battle field (walls become visible when you run into them). It makes gameplay interesting, but I liked the technique better when it was utitilized in the antique PC game, Moria. You can collect powerups to supposedly you to the exit, but neither are very helpful. The Ax is constantly used unintentionally at the wrong time, and the scroll conveniently takes you right into an enemy's path.
The biggest drawback to the game has to be its bugs. The collision detection between your "rogue runner", the enemies, scrolls, and door, is very iffy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The random maze generator sometimes has the unfortunate result of trapping you in a confined area with no way out and no enemy to kill you. The only alternative is to restart. Score isn't kept, and I don't believe the game ends, which is minor drawback. On the brighter side, the game is very small at ~1500 bytes.
Overall, download it for its originality, but do not expect to keep it as a mainstay in your TI-82's limited memory. |
